I pre-ordered mine, had it for a little bit now, think since the 1st September so just over a month and after waiting out handing mine back for a temporary phone until the replacements ship, now the replacements have been setting on fire.

The phone was software limited to 60% a few weeks ago, which is fucking annoying but ultimately, I have a device that could potentially set on fire more than others.

Anyone got a good replacement suggestion? I kind of went for the Note 7 for the VR headset, which I could get an S7 edge and it work still but I'm not really sold on how amazing a gear VR is over one of the other slightly higher end "cardboard" devices but made of plastic.

I don't do Apple, so another droid is in order.

Any suggestions?

Are they spontaneously combusting because users are leaving a lot of stuff running?
It all seems rather odd that one particular model is suddenly doing this.
Is it the battery or something else getting too hot... Confused

The new Xperia ZX looks interesting, whether or not it offers a big improvement from the Z5 Premium is a matter of opinion.

Go have a look at some Sony Superphones. Thumbs Up

They use LiPo batteries which have extremely high energy density. This is good. Problem is they are fragile and a fail deadly tech so much that Royal Mail don't ship them.

Puncture them, overcharge them (causing heat), get them hot or don't balance the cells frequently (causing cell membranes to decay) and they suffer thermal run away which is a positive feedback loop generating more heat then fire and burning themselves out RC/Drone fliers and air softers see it now and again. This is why LiPo safe charging bags/boxes are sold.

Look up youtube lipo explosions. Or take an old phone battery and stab it.

The new LG V20 looks like a decent contender. As does the Google Pixel XL.
I, myself, went for the cheaper, riskier route by getting a SIM only contract (£20 a month for 30GB date - with a cashback offer which makes it the equivalent of £13pm) then bought a Oneplus 3. Specs wise it's right up there with the best of them - better in some regards (6gb RAM). The reviews are great too.
I'll find out when it arrives. Due to be dispatched 24th October.

Here's a comparison of the Note 7, V20 and Pixel XL

Just like all the other phones and cameras which don't catch fire.
If properly managed the battery shouldn't be getting too hot much less punctured etc.
But do we know it is the battery rather than faulty circuitry shorting out due to phone flexing in pocket or something.

Other phones and cameras have caught fire previously. Hover board things last year too. My old sony phone next to me has a hard plastic case around it to resist punctures and has plenty of space to vent heat.

In order to get minimum weight and smallest/thinnest size they maybe reduced the thickness of the battery shell so it couldn't resist punctures or had a flaw in the charging circuit. Lipos really don't like over charging either.

Samsung has fucked themselves with this, god only knows what 2.5 million devices sold + replacements have cost them, only to cease all production and sales world wide.

Imagine it set a plane on fire something, bad bad news as they have no idea which units are faulty so recalled them all and let's be honest, a massive chunk of them won't bother returning the phone, so we'll be hearing of more incidents for some time I think.

I came from an LG G3 which I had 2 years to the Note 7 and it was a superb phone. Gave it to my brother who smashed his iphone pretty much the same day I got the Note and he said it's one of the best phones he'd used for a while.

Going to do some research on the V20 and Pixel, cheers.

Ste... not really in to Sony phones for some reason, don't know what it is.

I currently have an LG G Flex 2. It was pretty high spec until the G4 came out. It's still a superb (if almost completely unheard of) phone. If I had the patience, I would have gone for the V20. I think my Oneplus will be alright and, given that I just got a £400 tax rebate, has knocked my monthly bill down considerably - with change.

Patience is not one of my virtues Laughing

Saying that, Pixel says around 20th Oct launch and I'm not in any big rush.

I've had the Gear VR for a month and to be honest, I kind of got bored of it because it's not "that" great in comparison to a high end Vive / Rift. I bought a plastic VR headset thing for £35 off Amazon about a year ago and used it with the G3 and to be totally honest, it wasn't far off the Gear VR...

Currently debating whether to buy a Vive or not, keep trying to justify it because I don't really game much these days and keep thinking, is this really worth £800?

My brother in law has one and after playing on his a few times, no. Not for me. It's a bloody expensive luxury. One that is way down on the shopping list.
If anything, I would get the PlayStation VR, but before that I would buy an Xbox One. Before that, a ton of things more interesting and entertaining. For me. Brother in law is happy with his though.

Now I feel I should be paying more attention to anything Jayy posts in the "last thing I bought" thread so I know what to avoid.

Sooo Jayy. I have these magic beans up for sale...

Not true, I had some delivered the other day, had a sticker on the packet declaring LiPo batteries were inside.

Love this time of year when the nights are drawing in, there's a chill in the air & the whole family gathers round a roaring Galaxy Note 7.

Just got a cracking deal on the Pixel XL.

The manager dude wiped the upfront cost of £160 completely, £33 a month, unlimited texts & calls + 3gb data.

Plus, when I take my Note 7 back in store, I get my upfront cost of £120 I paid for that refunded to me.

Sweet as a nut. Should arrive next Thursday.
