Reeto, any car boffins about?

We're looking at replacing the 1litre kia picanto a it's terrible for our usage (mainly long motorway journeys) so we're taking a look at a vauxhall insignia at the weekend.

Just want to know if theres anything in particular I should be looking out for (common problems?) on a 2litre diesel, 2009

Sure, but if it's not already terminally shagged then long motorway runs are exactly what it'll thrive on.

If you have time to get your hands on an OBD reader I'd recommend plugging one in and see if there are any historical faults logged. This counts double if you're buying from a dealer who might just have cleared off a raft of nasties in the hope that they won't come back until after you've put your money down.

My power steering pump failed on my 59 plate. Much cost, good car otherwise (in a motorway munching kind of way, and with the 165bhp engine reasonably quick.)

I have a Corsa diesel (1250ccs of turbo powered granny driving). Like a pocket sized version of what you're after.
When you turn the key one click (before turning the ignition on) look out for ER2 and ER4 on the dashboard near the odometer.
If memory serves, ER2 is a bulb out (even though there wasn't on a few occassions) and ER4 is water in the diesel or something. Dunno. I blasted it down the motorway at a very hearty 70mph (steady) and it seemed to have sorted it out.
It's a common problem though, apparently.

I think they are great looking cars which seem to be well spec'd for the price.

But for some reason, they don't hold their money at all and seem to have a stigma attached to them.

Maybe the bandit of the rep car world?

I'd have one if I was running it in to the ground, but if I wanted to sell it on after a few years then perhaps I'd go for something with better resale.

My dad's got one and it seems pretty good to me. Ultimate motorway cruiser, gets about 70mpg or something daft (tells you on the dashboard), although this would soon be negated if you do a lot of stop-start driving.

As far as I'm aware it's had one major repair job that cost a fair whack, and recently the clever computery thing made the car stop about half a mile from home, needing an AA guy to come out and fix it - a simple job if you've got that magic computery box to connect to the car.

Personally I think I'll always have an aversion to magic computery cars for exactly the fact that it adds needless bumf to what is still essentially still a motorcar, and in this case a diesel so it should be more trouble-free than is apparent.

Having said all that, if I were going to choose a modern, easy to drive, good-looking mid-priced "exec" style car, I'd take one.

Of course, but it doesn't seem to get particularly bad reviews......Ok it might not be a passat or a mondeo, but it just seems to suffer gremlins from past incarnations of the vauxhall family saloons!

I guess it's the whole Mondeo man becoming 3 series... err... slag? Before they nearly went bust (2010?) I'd say Vauxhall made decent cheap cars, but the quality seems to have gone from the newer models. I also actually agree with Clarkson, Fords have a better driving feel than other 'cheap' cars.

However most people buy German anyway.

I've driven the petrol one a couple of time on fairly long runs. Engine was totally gutless, but you're not considering that engine.

Visibility was a bit odd. Quite a low roofline and drivers seat, big pillars, but also big mirrors - so you can see around well using the mirrors, but not so well looking around.

The steering was really heavy, and even heavier at motorway speeds.

I couldn't work out the auto handbrake, but it was a hire car so I could just abuse the clutch instead. Suspension happily handled speed bumps without any braking.

Dont do it ffs! Gearboxes munch themselves for fun, electrical gremlins galore, water leaks from various housings. Intercooler pipes that fall off every 6 months. I used to be a vauxhall man, but after working on them for the last few years they have really gone to shit.
Go and buy a slightly older toyota avensis and save yourself hassle and money.

one of my colleagues has one, so far this year it's cost £3k to keep it on the road!

This has included the timing belt being done,
The timing belt being re-adjusted as it slipped or something
the expansion tank being replaced as it split
the clutch being replaced
injectors replaced
Power steering rack

To be honest, it's a bit of a trigger's broom…

It's made me not touch a vauxhall for a while anyways

Hope you've got deep pockets as fuel pumps, injectors, turbos, dpf & dmf ain't cheap. Otherwise they're just fine.

hmmz, slightly concerned now will be going to look it over anyway so will see how it is in the flesh,

42k miles on it, all prev MOTs have been clean with no advisories but will read more into the common issues mentioned above cheers BCFmassive

7 years old and only 42k miles. It's a definite candidate for a DPF/EGR issue, although it may have already been done.

Depending on what the car costs and running costs are for a set period of time/Depreciation costs.. Consider a lease on a new car.

Initially, it seems quite counter intuitive. However, my costs are around £6700/£6800 over 2 years total (monthly and upfront rentals) and that is a maintained, brand new car with warranty and breakdown included.

Based on 10K miles but excess maintained miles are 12p so £600 per 5K extra - this incudes all consumables and servicing.

The only other costs are only Fuel and Insurance.
