Hi everyone

So I've seen plenty of bikers carrying an electric guitar (which is quite a bit heavier than a cello) on their backs. I've seen people carrying an absolutely absurd amount of cargo on their scooters or bikes in Vietnam.

my cello (in its hard case) weights roughly 8 kg. So it's not heavy, but it is quite big. I've tried having it on my back, but it is just too wobbly and doesn't feel secure, plus the pillion seat really gets in the way of carrying it there anyways.

I was thinking, would it be possible to strap it to the bike somewhere? On the rack at the back or on the side? I know this must be possible, people have strapped heavier stuff on it before, and people going on a long tour across Europe or wherever manage to get a lot of stuff on their bike, but the cello in its case is quite a big thing. Here's a picture:

https://thumbs2.picclick.com/d/w1600/pict/162166374465_/Hiscox-Litelife-hard-cello-case.jpg

It's big, but not heavy.

There is also the possibility of using a small trailer to tow it in too I suppose.

So yeah how would I go about carrying this on the motorcycle? it's a Yamaha YBR 125, so its quite a small bike.

Would look at seeing if there are any outrageous cissy bars available.
Or have one modded to a normal rack. then sit the base of the cello on the passenger seat and strap to the rack. I have carried similar sized things hanging off the back of a bike before on a standard rack but wouldn't like to make it a regular thing.

Towing regs don't allow you to tow with a vehicle less than 125cc.
There's also restrictions on towing with L-Plates. so on either score you can probably knock the trailer idea on the head.... unless you can do the trip on a push bike with a kiddie cart on the back?

{There's a chap round here who's modified one of them to haul behind a 180cc pit-bike Shocked I think expressly to exacerbate local plod, TBH... he did have a detachable side car on it at one point!}

To my mind, the ideal solution would be to mount the thing as low as possible, and to the bike.

My first thought would be some sort of rack to put it behind the number-plate; with a number-plate and lights attached to teh celo case where it obscured any; but probably more practical would be to mount it as a single 'panier' on a side rack besides the back wheel; where it could still be pretty low, and the wight better balenced further forwards.

But in either instance, it would beg a 'custom' fabricated rack; or at least pretty significant adaptation of a universal accessory rack!

If it's not something you have to carry every trip, would you not be better off taking a taxi? Or the bus?

it's not a weight issue, it's a size and shape one, you're going to have a nightmare trying to secure that in any other way than on your back. Laughing

I'd imagine carrying a cello on a YBR 125 would be interesting when it's windy, no matter how you secure it. Laughing

If you break the cello up with a lump hammer , you`ll be able to get in an ordinary top-box Thumbs Up

That would be a funny video on it`s own : "Loony Biker Destroys Cello" Laughing

Greetings, fellow cellist.
Persoanlly, I looked mainly into adding fixing points to the cello case so I could mount it on the side of a pannier rack, then strap it across the back of the bike to the opposing half of the rack. However, it's an expensive and cumbersome item to risk like that, so think carefully.

if it's any help, a friend of mine used to carry his bass guitar in it's case upside down on his back (normally you'd have the body at the bottom, head at the top)

This way, when he got on the bike from it's left hand side, the neck of the guitar hung down behind his left leg with the body of the guitar above the seat, on his back

That's a double bass, even bigger than the cello.

He's on a bicycle though, so there's no pillion seat behind him interfering with the bottom of the instrument case.

That's the main problem really.
