I want to be able to give lifts on my bike to family and friends; none of whom have helmets, and I only have my own. So I need to get myself a spare (or more?) for this purpose. But what to get? I'm sure quite a lot of people in my position would happily buy a second-hand lid in as big a size as possible, so that 'legally' it would fit any head. However I do take the responsibility of carrying a pillion very seriously, and would never forgive myself if one got mashed due to me scrimping on a helmet.

I'm well aware that a decent fit is the single most important aspect of using a helmet, which suggests that buying several cheap helmets in a range of sizes is more sensible than buying a single dog's bollocks one.

There aren't one (or two) specific individuals who I'm more likely to carry than others, so there's no particular value in hauling someone to my nearest lid shop for a bespoke fit.

What do others do? Would be interested to hear.

The only pillion iIhave ever had in 16 years was my mate who rides anyway so had a lid

We went from his house to another to pick up a van

If they want to go on yourbike get them to pay for the lid

Just get a Medium, second hand will do. Or you could wrap a towel or hoodie round their head and claim they are sikh. Or recently become sikh and that it's a turban on their head and the popo should stop being so disrespectful.

Get an XL and an assortment of hats for people to wear to pad it out?

Alternatively they buy their own helmets.

Not every helmet fits every head shape so it's not even as simple as order one size of the cheapest helmet on the market for legality's sake. I dare not mention the fact that it sounds like quite an expensive service you've offered out. How many of these people have been on the back of a bike before and may want to more than once? Could be a lot of money down the drain otherwise.

As above buy their own or find alternative transport. Should have got a car if you want to be a taxi to everyone. Thumbs Up

If they want a ride, they get the gear. It's not just a lid, it's a jacket, trousers, gloves and boots. Because Gravel rash fucking hurts.

My daughter being the only exception to this rule.

I have a spare set of gear, it's gear I don't use anymore as it's not as waterproof as it once was or is a bit more worn - I commute daily so gear wears out.

not taken any passengers anywhere yet!

Agreed - any pillion I take has full gear. My girlfriend has better gear than I do! Just as well because I binned it (at relatively low speed) about 3 rides after I got it all for her... Very crappy road surface combined with a lack of experience on my part.

'What's that? You've no helmet? Oh, sorry, me neither. There's a bus stop just up the road though....'
The only two I give pillion rides to have their own gear - and that's infrequently used anyhow!

I regularly give lifts too and throw from work. Most have they're own equipment. One young lad wanted a lift (its a 7 mile walk or a 2 mile trip through the tunnel) and borrowed a helmet from his dad. To make it fit he wears a beany hat underneath and marigold gloves on his hands!

full gear for pillion preferably they provide own helmet that fits.

Only taken one mate out and carried round a spare set of full gear with me for them to put on, luckily helmet was a reasonable fit but it's less than idea them not having their own.

On a side note, it was hilarious having him panic when we stopped at some traffic lights and I asked him if he'd put his seatbelt on, he was scrabbling around looking for one Laughing

Get an old open face helmet with an adjustable strap if you have to. That way it will fit almost anyone. If they don't like it screw them and tell them to buy there own equipment.

Unless they've got a urking great head, or one the size of a pinhead, a medium will be fine, having said that, I've got a few spares anyhow. For my nieces & nephews, I have an XS helmet.

For the most part, lift, fun rides round the block are only short distance, everyone else, who I'll take further, daughter & missus, has their own helmet & gear.

Either way, I wouldn't want to be in a position where I don't have a spare helmet, but then I use my bikes pretty much daily.

I took a friend from uni on the back of my bike, he is Sikh and screamed the whole 5 minute journey.

Cool story bro Mr. Green

Tut Tut
That would mess up the statistics. Today, the pillions are more prone to a accident related injury/death than the riders/owners of motorcycles. Let's not make motorcycle riding more dangerous for us, than it is.
