Bike tax - 41 years old bike!

I've been trying to tax my RD. ITS 1974, so should be tax excempt, but the dvla website wants ££££ for it. It's not much, but surely it should be free?
How can I swap this please?
Ta!

Quick trip to the p.o. later, I've got a taxed historic vehicle. Simple!

My bike is a 1976. Last year the MOT guy told me he thought it should be tax exempt this year, but it's apparently not. They still take a direct debit from me for tax.

I was told that they would write to me and tell me when my bike was tax free, but I doubt this is the case. It's totally unlike them to do anything correctly and without persistant badgering.

As for when exactly a bike is considered I've heard it's either when the bike was made or when it was registered but I can't remember which aty the moment, but again I seriously doubt they will be bothered to just automatically notify you.

Nobody at the MOT station last time seemed to know how it actually works. Either way by this time next year my bike SHOULD be over the age limit at 41 years old and be tax free.

I've also heard that unless you chase it up yourself they will continue to charge you tax for your tax free vehicle, and you can get done for not paying it (apparently). I wonder how many people are getting caught out assuming that when their bike is old enough the idiots at DVLA will just sort things out automatically?

As usual anything connected with DVLA is a minefield of idiocy, outright lies and beaurocratic bungling, so just be aware.

It won't be, it's on or before Jan 1, so effectively 1975 models become exempt this year.

The 40 yr thing is a bit of a con
It has to be registered before 31st January of that year,so my 1976 car isnt exmpt this year as it,and the majority of cars/bikes will be after the 31st.
So they have to be 41 yrs old,and the exemptions only run from April of the next year so ive still got 6 mths to go

They wont tell you either ,just keep letting you pay, unless you change the status to Historic vehicle

Hang on to your old wreck long enough and you might not need an MoT either.

When are we getting free insurance for such classic thoroughbreds as the C12?
