Deliveroo - anyone worked for them/know anyone that has?

Why would they increase their wages whilst people are still willing to work for them?

I'm not understanding the "Tips".
When did tipping a delivery driver become a thing?
Are we supposed to tip the postie, as well, everytime a piece of junk mail arrives?

Meh... I don't know- why did people start tipping waiters?


They generally provide a bit more of a service than rocking up at your house in a dirty overall and handing over a box full of sweaty pizza.

I'm amazed that learner riders are still allowed to act as professional drivers [riders] and actually work on the roads for a living without even needing to sit a theory test. Is the UK unique in allowing this?

With regards to tipping, I usually tip 10% at restaurants and give pizza boys £2 (I used to deliver pizzas in my yoof, so feel for them - plus I know that they remember who tips and who doesn't, so when it comes to multi-drops - you've a much better chance of getting the first uncrushed-and-not-cold-yet delivery)

I've never tipped a parcel delivery driver though.

60% more deliveries meaning they earn more?

Or the faster transport mode means they do longer distance deliveries so the deliveries per hour for bikes and motorbikes is similar?

Also... is Deliveroo a thing that you can just dive in and out of as you please? Or do you get given shifts each day/week?

Doing this studenty stuff, and being a motorbikey person, it's a thing I'd consider if it's flexible enough. Nice little side earner.

Re Percy's posts, that's generally the problem I find with this sort of thing.

I have a bit of free time at the moment, wombling about delivering bits and bobs sounds quite fun.

Getting calls asking me where I am or what do or who is this, or being asked to pay for something that gets nicked out of my box? Smells like prole hour to me.

It's hard to figure out what people are actually saying though through the fluff. Does "forced to speed" mean "paid per drop", or literally "get this there under 15 mins or do not pass GO"?

I haven't worked for Deliveroo, and probably never will - I'd more likely go somewhere like Papa John' and let them provide the moped.

I live and work (as a bus driver) in a city which has Deliveroo, and the one thing I can tell you is that I'll never order from them because I won't have the death of one of their riders on my conscience. What I mean by this is that I'm also a cyclist, mainly for commuting, and take some risks but the stunts these folk pull have even me cringing at times. It's only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt, be it a rider or the pedestrian they're likely to take out. I'd prefer that not to be on the way to my house.

It's strange that in a country where franchisees for companies such as Domino's, Papa Johns and Pizza Hut are specifically asked not to use self-employed drivers/riders to reduce risk, something else pops up in its place.

That would be the ones who were taken on saying they were cyclists but in fact use cars or bikes.

There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. I started at the beginning of April so I will try and address the points raised above for those thinking about joining. First, the pay is better than any other minimum wage job, e.g. retail. I'm a cyclist so I get £6/hour (scooters get £7 and petrol) + £1/drop + tips. I just looked at my pay slips and it works out at £9/hour. If you'd rather work in your local supermarket or JD Sports for £7.20/hour then go for it! I'd rather be outside riding a bike for more money.

No it's £1 per drop from your first shift.

I never go through red lights, zebra crossings, etc. simply because, aside from wanting to keep my head in one piece, I don't want to lose my job. I honestly think a lot of people see the big box and just think it looks dangerous or unstable (or plain silly!) and it has nothing to do with how the person is actually riding. The bag is actually light and the same width as my back. It makes no difference to my cycling safety, it just knocks a couple mph off my speed.

Yes it's one drop at a time of very short distances. I do 2.5 drops per hour on average per month. As someone who has also worked for Domino's I can assure you the money is worse there, plus their delivery drivers aren't just drivers, you also have to do work in the kitchen when there's no orders and you have a direct supervisor. After I quit I sold my moped and got an R3 so I cycle for Deliveroo and it's all riding and you're on your own all day everyday to work as you please. You book all your shifts online and start work simply by turning your phone on. I don't interact with management at all, it's great.

We get a performance report every two weeks which gives us our average times right down to the second, e.g. average time to accept an order once it's popped up on our screen (we have to do this within 30 seconds), average time to get to the restaurant/customer, etc. If this slips below the threshold we can be given the boot if we don't improve our score. I have had an unhappy customer only once and that was when the chef at the restaurant was behind and I waited for 30 minutes outside. Nothing I can do about that and the restaurant phoned the customer to apologise and the owner of the restaurant gave me £2.

I hope that clears up some myths for anyone looking for a job. I'm doing my masters and this job has been perfect. Flexible shifts, no boss, good money, and lots of exercise after a boring day sitting on my backside in the library. There's no way I could ever return to retail or hospitality, and having to deal with customers all day and supervisors/managers, etc. for £7/hour. However, I would prefer to be back on a motorbike so next year I might sell my R3 and get a 125cc and an R6. Exercise is good and all but it would be great to be paid to ride my motorbike!

Well it would certainly help if they only employed rider's who had passed their tests....
Doing this as a "L" plater should be illegal Shocked

There are a couple in Leeds who will soon be dead... most likely under my wheels if they think they can use cycle lane, then skip to the outside and back again, turn right from a cycle lane without looking despite traffic moving.....

Just out of interest, what would happen if you had an accident? Would you be covered? I'm just thinking, if you ride like a cunt and cause someone's car to be written off, and then your insurance refuses to pay out because you were using it for business use not whatever you'd told them you were using it for, where does that leave the poor innocent driver whose car you've fucked?
