Yes, I know no one pays attention to them - I just want the alarm to wake ME up. It doesn't even make a huge difference if it's a disc lock or a padlock.

I keep my bike in a communal garage, chained to a lamppost with a 19mm Pragmasis chain. Since the garage is right above my bedroom, I want a lock with alarm simply in the hope that, should any distinguished gentleman make an attempt on my bike, the alarm would wake me up.

In fact, I might leave the alarmed lock in the garage and not even carry it with me, as I understand (but happy to be proven wrong) all these locks offer less security than my 19mm Abus u-lock I keep in the topbox, and which I use when out and about.

I'd rather not install an alarm on the bike because they're more expensive, and because I'm afraid it would bee too much of a drain on the battery as I already have a tracker.

Yes, I know absolute security doesn't exist, I know it's not impossible to muffle the sound of these alarms, I know if a thief is determine enough there's no stopping him, I know all that... let's just say I want to increase my chances a bit!

Thanks!

I have an Abus Detecto 7000 on the Viff for out and about. Decently loud and doesn't go off if you knock the bike, only if you actually fuck with the lock itself which is good because you know someone is actually going at it rather than it went off because a squirrel farted near it.

The Abus Detecto are 100 dB instead of the 120 dB of the Xena, but the Xenas have many negative reviews on Amazon and the like, about false alarms and units failing after a few months.

What was your experience with the Xena?

Oxford has u-locks with 120 dB alarm
https://www.oxfordproducts.com/motorcycle/brands/oxford/locks/u_locks/oxford_alarmd_max_duo_320mml_x_173mmw_x_14mm/

but I haven't found reviews.

Oxford's big boss alarm is 100 dB: https://www.oxfordproducts.com/motorcycle/brands/oxford/locks/disc_locks_and_padlocks/oxford_bigboss_alarm_disc_lock_16mm/

Some cycling forums speak highly of the Krabus, with a sensitivity that can be programmed:
https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/144109/
https://www.kabrus.co.uk/xl505.html

Has anyone tried them?

I've got the oxford big boss and it seems ok.

The warning sound when arming is louder than the actual alarm which seems a bit strange. Sensitivity seems ok, but I do wish it was a bit more compact, takes up a lot of room in my limited under seat storage.

been looking at xena as a possible alternative or an abus detecto

xena does give false alarms, usually only the one as I set it up and walk-off,but the wind can set it off.... in your garage this won't be an issue

Not like the alarm is going to do anything.

When was the last time anyone paid attention to a car/house alarm going off?

Which is precisely why I said very clearly that the one and only reason I want an alarm is in the hope it would wake ME up at night, since my bike sleeps in a garage just below my bedroom.

I know it would make no difference when out and about.

Pages you!

I have bought stuff using Amazon's International service and it works well.

it's a deterrent for opportunistic thieves that don't know any better and also like Londoner where I park my bike at work, I can actually hear the alarm from my office if it's triggered ...

i am sure an alarm would put-off your usual chav with a bolt cropper type of thief, obviously not a professional who would just foam spray it or something

Which is why I don't plan to use it as a my main security - that's what the 19mm Pragmasis chain is for, like I had written.

This baby seems interesting:
https://www.kabrus.co.uk/xl802.html

It's the only one I found with a 140 dB alarm; dB is a log, not linear scale, so 140 dB is muuuch louder than 100 (if the specs are true and not totally made up).

Quote:

When it is in alarm mode, if there is any slight wind movement the alarm will not sound, the control unit can recognize tampering and innocent movement i.e. wind conditions. If tampered with, the lock will sound 3 ear piercing bleeps and automatically increase sensitivity, if tampered again within 1-30 seconds just even a slight movement or any foreign metal contact on the shackle will immediately sound a 10 seconds 110db alarm.. After the 10 seconds alarm has sounded the lock will be in a high alert state (maximum sensitivity) for 30 seconds and will repeat the 10 seconds alarm if tampered with again and thereafter will drop sensitivity one level at a time after it has sensed no movement for 30 seconds. This unique technology ensures no false alarms.

On paper it sounds sensible, but I'm struggling to find actual reviews - I am a skeptical person, after all!

I have got a Xena aswell. an can confirm the false alarm right after you set it an walk off.

Oh also it tends to go all dramatic (goes off randomly) when the battery is on its way out too

im agreeing with you lol. i simply use the alarmed disk lock as a deterrent that is all. unfortunately my 2nd site in westminster has nothing to chain too so i have an 11mm abus disc lock on the front aswell Rolling Eyes and park next to other bikes hoping mine wont be noticed. i think when i upgrade im going to have to find somewhere to chain it to but this area is a nightmare and wardens everywhere.

let me know what you find as i am interested in getting a new one when i get new bike, the abus sledg seems the best out of what i have found

Where in Westminster? I don't remember if I mentioned this to you or to someone else in another thread, but most q-park car parks in Westminster happen to be free for motorcycles: https://www.q-park.co.uk/parking-with-q-park/park-with-q-park/london-parking/motorcycle-parking-

Do you always park in the same bay? Is there any kind of street furniture there? Would you consider leaving a longish chain fixed there? You mentioned you cannot chain it to anything, but if you could leave a chain/ulock chained to a lammpost, say, a few metres away and retrieve it from there?

I'd never consider an alarm for when I'm out and about, unless I was within a few metres of the bike.

Also, most of these alarms can be easily muffled with a towel or something similar. I don't think there is any that is particularly harder to muffle than the others, or is there?

On second thought, the lock with the pager could be interesting precisely because of this: even if a thief manages to muffle the sound, the remote should still warn me, as I'll keep the remote in my bedroom, just above the bike.

im much further away from any Qpark or underground car park. I am actually in Paddington, i park opposite the main hospital QEQM in the allocated bays. nothing around here to chain too in the bays and rest of street is all yellow lines so couldnt chain to a lamp post.

my other site is much better, free underground parking under hospital, anchors to chain too, much better

I seem to remember the bays between Talbot square and Sussex gardens have some anchors: those crescents which lie flat on the ground, and which you can push up. I saw the same kind in many Chelsea bays.

There are also many private residential buildings in the area (eg in Westbourne terrace) with bays for motorcycles. I suppose they're mainly on private land for residents only, but I have never double checked. I noticed the signs of some private parking enforcement company there, but I have no idea if private wardens ever actually patrol the area or not.

I use an Oxford Screamer disc lock (alongside an Almax chain when at home) and it's pretty loud (unsure on specific db readings). Only downside it how sensitive the thing is, the alarm goes off when i'm simply entering the key to disarm and remove the disc lock.

This, this made me laugh. Laughing Laughing

I've got a JCD disc lock, only cost 20 pound and its been good to me so far. Loud alarm and easy to lock up.
