Planning to do a oil change this weekend, just realised that i haven't got anything to put the old oil in, had a look in the kitchen and the only things i can find is a empty plastic milk carton and and empty bottle of squash, will these be safe to hold the oil in outside till i take it to the council tip, in a week or so?
Cheers
WN

Yeah, there is nothing in oil that will cause the plastic to melt or split open. I use those plastic trays for paint rollers (very useful for the mini as it has very little ground clearance Smile ) to catch all the oil, then an old paint tin to store the oil in.

Goto Halfords and you can pick up for about £6 a 6 litre oil draining container and one side of it is contoured as to catch the oil properly without it spilling over. It will be good for 2 or 3 oil changes depending how much volume oil comes out of your bike.

One you've done 2 or 3 oil changes the old oil in the draining container can be transfered to the recently emptied containers that was originally used to fill the bike up and so take the filled ones to the dump instead for safe disposal.

I just use a big old fabric conditioner bottle. Good wide neck and resealable lid. It too will probably be good for about 3 changes on my bike Smile

I use an oil washing up bowl, then once finished pour the used oil in the empty oil bottle and stick it to one side until I can be arsed to next go down the dump and pour it into the oil bank. My bowl hasn't melted yet and it's had an awful lot of oil, brake fluid, petrol and other nasty liquids in it over the years. Think it cost 99p Razz

Get down your local school and blag an empty 25li plastic bottle, the sort that cooking oil comes in - they're only too glad to get rid of them.

When it's full - 5 oil changes or two years on average, take it down the local tip *sorry, re-cycling centre* and tip the lot into their big drum, then start again.

Or treat your garden fence with it Wink

You can also get drip trays (if that's what they're called) from Hein Gericke. Place under bike, dipstick out, whip out the sump place and Bob's your uncle. No f*cking about with transferring out between containers. I found it help about 2 oil changes worth.

I used a washing up bowl until I realised it was cracked. Since then I've used an ice cream tub, which at 2 litres are a handy size for a 1.1 litre sump.

Once it's out of there, it gets poured into a large orange squash bottle, large enough to take a few changes. I disposed of the last few litres on Bonfire night. Whistle

(It was having difficulty starting... Shifty )

P.S. Yes I know engine oil does not burn easily, but use kitchen roll as a wick and it literally goes up in smoke.

Pour some of it into an old shampoo or washing up liquid bottle - anything you squeeze to dispense - and use it to give your chain a serious lubing now and then.

D'yer know, that's one of the most sensible and blindingly obvious things I've ever read, how come I never thought of that before Embarassed

Hi

We tend to just accumulate it in drums until we can be bothered to get rid of it. Buying it in 20L drums makes it easier.

Charlotte took a load down to the dump and felt quite self concious dumping 95 litres under a sign that said "no trade waste".

All the best

Keith
