pootling through a 30mph limit at 30mph, a scooter overtakes me, the first I know of his approach is when he's along side me close enough that if I were to stick my arm out, I'd hit him.

Stuff happens,

In hindsight, I should have let him go when we caught the driving school car up but at the time I was just trying to create distance.

How could / should I have stopped this situation escalating?

post edited to prevent anything coming of it being posted online - I got the answer to my question, cheers

I award you one:

Only silver though, because even though you saw someone doing something and could have stopped them, you didn't stop them.

You got overtaken and turned it into something personal. Just shrug it off, you weren't harmed.

thanks for the badge, I'll wear it with pride, perhaps

Yeh, I think you're right, next time I'll just shake my fist in a display of 1930's frustration, call him a knob and let him go on his way.

This is a clear example of when you needed a helmet cam to record this foul deed, with your own live commentary and then post to YouTube. This makes you always right and never wrong. You can go full smuglord by actually telling the scooterist that you have the camera on and that this will be going on YouTube, because that always stops them. Thumbs Up

You got your ass handed to you. By someone willing to take more chances. On a scootay.

Things I've learned in life include this one: There's always a bigger fish. You might be Valentino Rossi, but sooner or later, along comes a Marquez and flops his pre-pubescents out and wees clearly all over your territory. You might own a tank. Guarantee you can finish most arguments with people with that piece of hardware, but there will definitely be a bloke with a bigger tank willing to make you look silly, somewhere.

Hmm? Sounds like idiot scooter rider is an idiot.
You cannot be accountable for idiot scooter rider acting like an idiot.

Your mistake was letting him get under your skin.
Let him fly off to his doom and crash somewhere else.

I have been riding a bigger and faster bike than the local idiots ped-boi and had it where they are trying to get past.
I just let them pass and worry about my own safety.

Hopefully you will ride down the road and find them in a burning heap Smile

I have thought about getting a helmet cam for two reasons;

evidence in an accident

to be able to look back on an incident / near miss and learn from it, work out where things started to go wrong to become a better and hopefully safer rider.

I don't have time for bawing on youtube

i ride in central london so people riding right behind you or next to you is a regular occurence, or overtaking you whilst filtering, or going the wrong side of the blue arrow central reservation things.

for this reason if i see another bike near me i just let them pass and if one is in front or beside me i fall back, especially a scooter rider, and even more especially if a delivery driver

Carry a broom handle in future. Front wheel works best. Wink
I was outraged last time I was out on the Spacker because a ped overtook me in slowish traffic.
I made myself OK with it by reminding myself several times that I was only running it in and next time things
would be different... Next time...

Had something similar happen when I rode to Whitby. Coming up through Pickering I ran into cloud, this continued across the moors. Now visibility was sub 40 yards, the clouds up there have lumps with black legs in them.

I had a Peugeot 206 right up my exhaust pipe, the prat was flashing his lights which was making the white out worse, in the end I slowed to about 15mph and he went past, leaning on his horn, no doubt screaming abuse. Now anybody who knows the Pickering-Whitby road knows that as you go past Fylingdales you start to drop, you also have a fecking sharp right hand bend.

Peugeot on it's side, in the ditch, wheels still turning and there he is standing at the side of the road waving. So I waved back as I carried on!

I had a similer story with a mazda mx5 overtook me in a 30 limit doing about 60

was right up my arse before that on a road he didn't know in rain just out the village becomes nsl again

got to the end of the road he didn't turn left for motorway or right for A38 he went straight on into the sign Laughing was just stood looking as I went past about five minutes later with his car wedged under it

Can I ruin the thread slightly and ask another question?

Yesterday on the M40, there was a decent (for the M40) flow of traffic in lane 2 and 3 of the motorway. Speed would have been around 65-70mph in lane 2 and 70-80mph in lane 3.

A bloke goes between lane two and three on his ZZR1400 filtering/lane splitting whatever the fuck it's called, and is basically weaving in and out of the two lanes into gaps between cars at 70mph+. The motorway was pretty constant with a good flow of traffic in each lane.

Is the bloke a cunt for doing this? Is it dangerous? And is he too important to choose a lane at 70mph and stay in it? I'm not a butt hurt car driver watching my life disappear in front of me, while hero on his 1400 scythes off into the sunset etc.

But is there a speed that between lanes of moving traffic that could veer between lanes unexpectedly as most aggressive care drivers do, is unsafe, foolish and life risking beyond reasonable?

My own view is that at 70mph car drivers will not be looking for a bike to be coming up between the lanes at that speed, and they may not see him or her before making a lane change, because they are not looking for a bike and the bike is going faster than both lanes of traffic.

Who's fault will it be in this situation if Mr car driver moves from lane two to three at say 70mph and T-bone's bike coming up on the outside of lane two? is there a point where you could realistically say rider is a cunt and should not have been doing this, as it's too risky? Or is it an automatic car hits bike, driver is going down big time for 20years?

What part of it was stupid? that he was so close to you? Do you ever filter/pootle past cars So Close that if you put out your arm you'd hit them!

TBH, on a bike if there is a lane moving a 70mph+ I would be and was happy to sit in it. If the middle lane was moving at say 60mph and the outside lane at 75mph, I would be happy with 75mph and fall into line.

I just didn't know if there was a generally accepted speed that it it not considered good practice to lane split or filter?

Can the average rider see well enough and plan well enough to filter between 60-70mph lanes of traffic and not get deaded? Is it just very pussy to sit in a lane on a bike?
