Hey everyone,

On a 125, straight road, normal riding, would you take the revs close to redline before shifting up?

Thanks

Yes if I wanted to get anywhere before dying of boredom.

Whereas on my 650 I do it because I'm a big kid and like the noise.

Yes.

No.

Maybe.

Take your pick, they're all as trivial as the question.

Helpful chap you are - was just wondering if it was safe for the engine to do so.

Manufacturer put the red line there for a reason. Below it you are fine. Probably well into it you will be be OK as they are going to allow some leeway.

If you are regularly bouncing it off the rev limiter, not so fine.

Well, obviously it's better long term for the engine if you don't.

But crikey, it would be dull.

My Vara used to hit its limiter, every day, for 22,000 miles.

Most of the 125's I've ridden didn't have rev counters.

I snapped a pushrod on my old 125 whilst in top gear/flat out drafting behind a van.
So yes, but not for sustained periods.

Surely you can "feel" when your bike is at it`s optimum power for you to change gear.
It`s a 125 and if you cane it to the limit all the time, it ain`t gonna last long.
Is it really worth thrashing it that hard for that extra 1 or 2 mph?

Treat it with love and it will love you back by being reliable Thumbs Up

When you`re on bigger faster bikes, then you can travel at light-speed and go a gazillion mph Eh?

I'd hit the limiter, if it has one, or rev until it won't accelerate any more in that gear.

Heck, I'm hitting the limiter much of the time in 1st and 2nd on my ~30hp 250.

Infinity and beyond!
Had an FZR250 years ago, EXUP valve opened at 10,000, redlined at 17,000 & revved up to 18,000! Laughing

This. What you don't want to do is end up in 5th gear at 30mph, not that I ever did that Embarassed

On 30mph back-roads I don't because there's no need and it's not often before I'm at the next red light, junction or roundabout. Adding in the narrow roads with parked cars either side and constant potential hazards it's not worth it. But sure when the roads are empty and it's late or early morning I occasionally like to have a bit of fun.

I do, often, however on roads such as the 40 dual carriageway and 40 main road because often cars are going much faster than the limit and therefore to have any chance of maintaining a safe speed redline is key to getting what little power the bike has out of it.

1st into 2nd I don't unless I feel the need to rev it out for longer than usual from a red light, mainly there's one part of my commute where two lanes merge into one just after a set of lights that has a each man for themselves attitude so it comes in handy then but besides that I usually do 2nd into 3rd and then don't care and redline in 4th and 5th. That being said 4th even on my slowpoke chinese fakeaway does 30 at low revs cruising comfortably or 40 high in the revs so 5th gear for me is only really on the long stretches of road. I rarely encounter it.

Long and short is yes but when needed and not for longer than needed. As above realize when you've run out power in that gear and go up.

On a 125 you pretty much need to redline it before shifting.

Yes just be careful you don't snap your powerband.

Hideously expensive to sort if you do.

I do so regularly, it's the only way to make any progress on a 125. Sitting at nearly 28k with no issues. Oil is changed with half decent oil every 1k max. If I'm just bimbling then I don't necessarily redline it, but when there's other traffic around I like to keep moving. To be fair though I still move quicker through roads up to 40mph a good bit quicker than most cars, even at higher speeds if the road is twisty.

Although as others have said, mine doesn't have a rev counter so I change when it stops accelerating and starts to vibe a lot.

I take it you're age/license limited as to what you can ride? Reason I ask is because if you're ragging the tits off a 125 to get where you're going then it's time to move up to something more suitable.

Oh and; inb4 Tef bores you to death with a tedious lengthy dirge on the entire history of 125s and every possible permutation of saying something simple. In fact, I bet he's typing a War and Peace right now....
