This morning I made the hour drive to Trailertek to have a towbar fitted and buy a bike trailer (just in time for next weekend's trackday at Brands).

Cost me £170 for the towbar and fitting and about £440 for the trailer by the time I added a spare wheel, holder, hitch lock, ramp and jockey wheel.

It seems pretty stable and isn't too big, although there is no way I can get it on it's end and into the back garden (which was the plan) as the bugger weighs 350kgs. So with that plan out of the window some reorganising was called for in the garage. We were never going to fit four bikes and a trailer in there so Jeanette kindly volunteered to put her NC30 in the back yard. I'm now glad that I decided against the two bike trailer as it was even bigger!

Anyway, roll on next Saturday (and can we have sun please!)

Wouldn't it have been a lot cheaper to hire a van for a day or two for when you need it ? Confused

Not if I have to do it for every track day. I plan on doing one a month this year. Plus hiring is a pain in the arse, picking it up dropping it off etc.

Well, at least you're going to make regular use if it and just remember when you're going around corners that you've got a greater overall length now with the added bike trailer.

Doesn't it require a stabiliser with it to avoid it potentially swaying/flipping over when you're on a motorway/dual carriage ways if it happens to be windy with the bike onboard. Added to that the stabiliser will keep the trailer from bouncing along the road when it's not loaded too.

Ey, those are real :B

As for stabilisers, worth looking at. Korn had one on the Mundaneo and we were coming back from Croft with 2 bikes on his trailer at over a ton - solid as a rock. Not essential though - wait and find out your trailer's natural snaking speed when loaded and take it from there.

Bloody hell, I'd need another garage for that.

I've not come across stabilisers for trailers before. How do they work (yep, I realise what they do, just how)?

Pretty much like a steering damper - have a look at https://www.towingandleisure.co.uk/Frames/Caravan_Stabiliser.htm

A torsional friction damper rather than a hydraulic longitudinal one though?

Same end goal though - to prevent rapid side to side motion. Smile

They seem very good. I'll be able to give you a better idea next week with I've driven with the bike on the back, but it was pretty easy to forget it was there when I was driving back (not always a good thing!) At 350kgs it's pretty solid too.

I was looking at the TwoTek one as well. That's a bit wider and heavier again. To give you an idea, I can get the trailer in the garage and it leaves enough width to get a bike (or bikes in this case) down the side of it. You wouldn't be able to do that with the TwoTek though.

If you go down to their warehouse they had loads of trailers so you can look at them all which helps.

Absolutely, if anything, a torsional damper is a better solution here than a longitudinal one. It was just me working out (out loud if you will) what the mechanism was that they were using. It annoys me when companies assume that the reader won't have a clue what they're talking about so just describe it in simpleton terms as a 'stabiliser'. A stabiliser is a outboard strut to stabilise things in my books. Smile

Roll on the TDCi and the trailer (actually, roll on the bike first!). Thumbs Up

If anybody else is looking for a trailer I'm selling mine (stabiliser included) as I've now bought a van - shameless plug:

I'd like to take credit but I actually bought it from a bloke who had it custom built by an engineering firm.
