Speedo sensor wiring

Ok so... I have a speedo, trailtech with a magnetic speedo sensor.

The sensor broke...

So I'm replacing it with this:

but the problem is that I have 2 wires coming from the speedo, and 3 coming from the sensor...

so I found this:

But still can't quite figure if I can make it work or not. From that, I'm guessing that I need to hook the switched wire to a 12v+ to make it work?

Your new unit looks like a hall effect sender and will need a +/- supply
the old one was probably a reed switch hence the two wires

The first thing I'd want to know is the working voltage of the hall effect switch
12v would be nice, easy and convenient but best check

I assume the diagram is of the trailtech thing?
If so, I reckon the blue shares a common ground with the HES
and the 12v supply too if it's happy at 12v

I'd then put the Pulse output from the HES to yellow(black)
and see what happens

It'll work between 5 and 36v, so should be fine with 12v

The diagram is from the sensors manufacturers website. After sleeping on it, I'm thinking the trailtech has signal and earth wires. In the diagram they've added a light which I'm guessing is their "indicator", so I'm thinking if I connect the middle and lower wires to the trailtech, and get 12v to the top one then it should work.

Unless I'm doing something stupid...

Red (brown) is your permanent supply, goes to battery or wherever you are taking it from.

Blue 3 is your GND. Needs Red and Blue to work. (Commoned with the Trailtech GND)

Yellow is your sensor output, goes to the input of the trailtech.

The new sensor wiring is exactly as janner_10 describes.
I don't understand the normally open and normally closed symbols on the diagram you show - is there a small plastic screw head on the side of the sensor? it may be reversible to work as no or nc.

You may also find that the load from your speedo is insufficient to allow the sensor to work - some sensors of this type need a little bit of load to make them work - I have had sensors that will not provide the input to a PLC until they were wired through a small relay.

You should be able to download a data sheet for your sensor from t'internet.

I had a check online but had conflicting info, some say the speedo wires in the trailtech are + and signal, others say it's - and signal... Ah well, the whole lot was free so it's not the end of the world if it fries itself.

Grab yourself a meter and it will be easy to check if its voltage or gound - no need to fry anything

Positive or Negative going won't really matter as the original reed switch basically shorted the wires together.
Current limiting is done internally by the Trailtech

I reckon it just puts out limited current voltage and when it sees it go low, counts that as a pulse
I'd just connect it up and observe how it behaves, a pull up
or pull down resistor on the ouput might help if it's a bit vague

If its not too late, be careful when ordering, your wiring diagram is for a PNP sensor.

The sensor in the pic is NPN.

Most common is a PNP style, but just double check the Trailtech manual.
