PostPosted: 19:16 - 22 Nov 2016    Post subject: Honda cg 125 Engine noise? Reply with quote

I have a 2002 Honda cg125, with 17,000 miles on it. I have noticed an engine noise ever since I bought it, six months ago. I would describe it as a rattle, or loud buzz. It only seems to happen at above 5,000 rpm, when accelerating hard. Have reset the tappets. Sounds a bit like a loose fuel tank vibrating. Have checked for loose bolts and parts. If it was big end, or little end, I would expect to hear it when accelerating at low revs. Cruising at 59 mph it is barely audible. Engine does not burn oil. Any suggestions please?

Which bolts did you check?
Most common one for some CGs to rattle loose is the engine mounting bolts.

I have checked all the engine bolts, including the the top ones under the tank. I have just joined the forum. Under my user name, it says "L plate warrior" which is a bit strange as i passed my test in 1962! I am undecided what to do about the noise. I will probably ignore it and see if it gets worse. If it does, I will either strip the head and barrel and inspect things, or buy a second hand engine. I wondered if it might be worn cam drive gears, camshaft or something like that. I wonder if anyone can tell me which parts tend to fail on this engine? I would have thought that 17,000 was relatively low mileage. The machine is ridden only for pleasure, and probably does about 50 to 100 miles a week.

I had a similar thing on my CG. Bought it like that.

I rebuilt the whole engine trying to get rid of it. It turned out to be valve stems Thumbs Up I just bought a replacement head and it solved it nicely Smile

The L plate warrior just means your new to the forum

I have an annoying rattle on my Bandit, finally tracked it down to a vibrating oil cooler guard - it only happens after a certain point in the rev range

I think its time to start checking your nuts an tightening where appropriate

BCF is a very friendly forum - maybe someone local can pop round, throttle you, and feel for tingling in your rusty nuts.

I had something similar on my 18k 2004 CG, viby, rattly noise at high revs. In the end it turned out to be the clutch cable routing.

Didn't work it out until I replaced the cable. It had been run over the top of the rubber tank mounting, instead of through the little clip thing on the frame. I'd criticise the previous owner more if I hadn't written the bike off myself.

Maybe check cable routing as well as the other things mentioned.

Had a bad noise on my CG, was the rear engine mounts, sold it with 25k on it, this was it.

Mark 65. When you say engine mounts, do you mean the lugs on the frame, or the lugs on the engine? How exactly did you work out the problem? Was it plainly visible, or did you have to strip things down to see it?
