During training, it was all a piece of piss. The GS500 felt like a 125 and I never ever had any issues with the manoeuvres. My instructor genuinely thought I'd done it before and the training felt like a waste of time and money.

On the day of the test I wasn't nervous at all. Not until a guy who done his mod 1 before me locked up both wheels during the emergency stopped and almost went into the examiner.

During my test, it was going very smoothly. I had 0 rider faults or issues until it came to my emergency stop. While I completed the stop with no difficulty, I feel as if I focused too much on trying not to lock up the weeks and as a result my emergency stop was "2 metres too long". It seems that seeing the previous mod 1 attempt subconsciously knocked my confidence and my instructor could see this through my reaction and body language.

I've got my retake on Friday morning and so I'd like to nail it this time. I'll make sure that I don't take the other manoeuvres for granted so that I don't fail again for anything silly.

Basically, I'm just going to mash the front brake this time (in a controlled manner of course) but what I'd like to know is how likely is it that I'll lock just the front brake of a GS500 with drained brake fluid on a shell-grip road surface?

TL;DR Failed Mod 1 on a GS500, how likely is it that I'll lock up the front for the emergency stop?

Should have gone with a school that uses abs enabled bikes.

That said, locking the front is hard work, sit back in the seat to keep the back down and pull evenly not grab, I'm pretty sure you'd have to be a master of fuckups to lose the front on nice tarmac. Unless of course it's rainy and your tyres are cold, then all bets are off.

Just practice before with varying degrees of vigour.

Oh and once you come through the speed test, ease off the throttle, you dont need to be gunning at the examiner. I even braked a touch before the stop.

Simple answer to simple questions is simple:

Stop overthinking it and making an issue out of a non issue. You can't solve a problem if it's not yes presented itself to you so wait for Friday to arrive and take a moment to yourself before setting of for the emergency stop and nail it, you've been there before so this time you know what you've got to do differently.

There is no "two meters too far" in the real world because there's either you stop in time or you don't, I'd love to laugh at the lines examiners whisper into students ears in their holy grail of a small office. Load of old cobblers. Just sing the merry tune and put it all together on the day and the rest is history, I don't even think back to my Module 1 all this time on because it's just another hoop to get through.

Enjoy. Thumbs Up

Don't over-analyse it, just do it. It's a perfectly simple manoeuvre that can be done on the cheapest Whang Dong 125s. Even a GS500 (A2?) can't be that bad.

Thanks for the advice all. Yeah it's for the A2 Thumbs Up

Tomorrow's forecast is looking alright. If anything it'll be quite breezy. Inb4 a cone blows into my bike during the swerve.

Inb4 obligatory "I passed" post.

Pull the leaver in slowly and you should be fine, build up the pressure don't just pull it like a trigger when you see him raise his hand.

Since you caution on the side of not braking hard I fail to see how you could lock-up the front wheel.

I was told there wasn't a certain distance on the emergency stop, it was just as quick as you can safely.

Only locked up the front wheel once when a van pulled across my path, and that was the closest call I've had.

You'd have to try pretty hard to lock the front up on most bikes, you're more likely to do a stoppie.

Don't want to sound like a dick but if you don't know the answer to that you aren't ready for your license. I understand losing your nerve before the test, whilst waiting for mine an instructor recalled a 'funny' story about someone locking up and crashing, where the examiner laughed and walked out the training area Shocked

However braking in a straight line isn't difficult, it isn't all that emergency either, it's more a quick controlled stop. As long as you don't grab at the front brake you'll be fine.

Obligatory "I passed" post. I'm quite a spirited rider and so everybody watching gasped as I was inches away from getting my knee down on the bend for the emergency stop and swerve.

My mod 2 was said to be "penciled in" by my instructor. I assume it'll be in about 2 weeks.

Thanks again for the advice and the good luck wishes are much appreciated Thumbs Up
