A friend of mine may have got caught speeding by a mobile camera van...

it was parked at the side of a dual carriageway with the front of the van facing him..

his estimated speed was around 150 when he noticed the van and he did slam the brakes on and end up going past it at about 70-80...

do they have cameras in the front of these vans? likely outcome?

around 2pm on a friday with a handful of cars on the road, dry conditions...

also poor obs

he did have reasons for this speed however not 100% ideal and would sound like a bullshit sob story and clearly no excuse

you Your friend now have a 50/50 chance of a ban or a £100 fine.

Seems pretty daft for you your friend to be going flat out on a Friday afternoon though. Especially Black Friday.

it was a dick move, he said the traffic was mega light and on a 3 mile stretch he only overtook 4 cars so was surprisingly quiet

They can have cameras anywhere. And if you can see the van, the van can potentially see you.

The possabilities range from 3 months in jail to nothing at this point until the waveform collapses in 14 days or when an NIP arrives.

Normally there are 2 operators in a scamera van especially for knobs like your pal, one takes a picky and the other writes the reg number down as the bike passes. He prolly get a ban for speeds like that.

Thats bollocks.

I ride past one reasonably often. Only one person in the van, taking pictures, plus a camera at the other end taking number plates in case iT's a bike etc.

My mate also did similar last year, though van was facing forwards. Went from 120 to 80 very quickly then realised 80 was still too quick whilst cruising past the van.

Tl:dr you will have no clue until a letter either does or doesn't fall through the letterbox

Tell him to buy some underwear with some decent elastic on the waistband.
They are going to get plenty of testing.

Most scamera vans can clock your ("friend's") speed on the approach and snap the plate on the other side.

Your friend might want to consider that even if he refuses to name the rider and gets 6 points for that, that the CPS might go ahead and prosecute anyway.

Your friend will be lucky if he avoids a custodial sentence for a real 150mph. Still, when he's doing porridge, he'll be able to read about himself in the papers.

The moment he receives the NIP / S172, he should contact a specialist motoring solicitor, and not make any excuses about why he can't afford to do so, or it'll probably come reet.

Dibs on keeping his girlfriend warm for him.

Maybe you've attracted the attention of a crap team of security service operatives?

Go ask them if they're special secret agents - they have to tell you, because law.

Not as much as hitting something at 142mph

He got off pretty lightly, but it sounds like he got his "moment of madness" blubbing in at the scene.

As always, post conviction you'll want to change vehicles, particularly while you ride sit out your ban.

Innit amazing how many folks happen across a camera van during that one brief moment of madness. There must be one on every corner.

They prefer long straights. It's almost as though they lurk on the safest bits of road, rather than the most dangerous. Surely I'm mistaken about that.
