I currently have a Suzuki Burgman 400 as my winter and work hack, it's perfect for simplicity and the fact I could practically wear a suit to work and not get wet feet/legs etc.

However it hates cold starts and despite new battery etc, a jump pack is the only thing making it start now it's got cold.

I'm after a replacement for the Burgman but scooters are quite rare secondhand.

The budget is £1600 and a top box or storage is essential for helmet and shopping, as is some protection from the elements.

What would you buy? I've looked at Pan Europeans but they're fairly rare too

Why not fix the Burgman?

Agreed, this should be a Workshop thread. You've already got the ideal vehicle, and my 2005 Burgman never struggled with cold starts.

Since it does start off a jumper, I'd be checking the battery charge and charging circuit. Clean or replace the spark plug, and check the airbox isn't full of oil, especially if it's pre-2007.

I've exhausted all possibilities with the Burgman and absolutely everything has been checked out.

I've had saved searches on ebay for months now with very little coming up.

After motorbike recommendations please

K100rs/lt/rt ? K75rs/rt/lt?

Can be had for cheap the engine gives out a lot of warmth on the legs, it was the only bike that I felt stable enough to ride on ice with. The engine is also naturally on its side so it doesn't matter that much if you do crash it (never have crashed one).

Just a typical 80's bike that can be gotten for peanuts, not bad on fuel about 50mpg and decent top end (140). Only real downsides are they are a bit weighty.

I bought a GPZ500S for beer money, not suggesting its optimal, but gets the job done.

A Silverwing would be amazing. That's another one on my Ebay saved searches, but again they don't seem to come along very often and within budget

Anything cheap will do realistically, something with shaft drive or a scooter probably best. The old BMW recommendation isn't a bad one if you don't want another scooter.

Anything you don't mind getting covered in crud / corrosion, especially, if the current predictions of what this winter will be turn out to be true !!

To OP, if it's a 6 mile commute I wouldn't bother with a pan (or TDM). Get a 125 scooter and something else for 'fun'.

An air cooled single FTW I'd say.

Cheap, warms up quick enough for 6miles, and cheap to service and for consumables too.

If the rural roads are under 50mph, and the A-roads part is not all busy dual carriageway or very fast hilly roads, a 125-250 thumper should be ideal.

I'd save any spare budget for another more fun bike, or an off reader or a track day hack or a show bike.
