Need to get a tank stripped back to bare metal, is sandblasting it a good or bad idea?

only issue I can think of is possibility of getting grit into the tank and thus into the fuel.

Wouldn't matter. The recovery people should be paying so let them do whatever until it's fine again.

Surely you won't be doing this one the bike so as long as it's properly cleaned afterwards it's going to be fine.

Surely your bike has an inline fuel filter. Unless it's got the fuel pump in tank I'd not be concerned. However I'd be blasting with it sealed.

I'd be doing it with a chemical paint stripper like paramose.

In fact, that's exactly how I have done it in the past.

What about letting the tank air out?

No fumes = no bang. This is the limit of my knowledge, and I could possibly be wrong

Hi

I needed to strip the paint from a tank earlier this year. It had been painted already, on top of the existing original paint

I bought some of this stuff which did the job, but took a while and several attempts. Put on, leave for a bit, scrape off. Initially with a scraper that used a Stanley knife blade, switching over to a scouring pad.

Half way through it looked like this (you can see the USAF logo from the original paint job).

Once stripped it looked like this:-

All the best

Katy

I did a trailer frame with an angle grinder wire brush. Very effective, but there was a lot of dust and definitely wear long sleeves, gloves, thick jeans and eye protection. Those little steel bristles eventually come loose and fly out at high speed. I had loads stuck into my overalls porcupine style. Laughing
It'd probably be a good idea to use ear plugs (as suggested) and a dust mask. I don't know what's in the paint you'll be stripping off, but I wouldn't want to be breathing it in.

Should only take a few weeks to air out fully.

Correct way would be to run warm water through it for 24-48 hours. That's run not soak.

Draining the tank and letting it sit in the sun should do the trick. As it's cold outside, I'd be tempted to use a heat gun, to help it a bit. If you take off the cap and tap, then there's a plenty of airflow coming through for the petrol to evaporate.

I drained my BMW tank, wiped out the dregs, sloshed it round with a cup full of brake cleaner and tipped that out, wiped it, warmed it up with a hot air gun held distant for 10 minutes, welded it and had it back on the bike full of fuel well inside of 2 hrs. The brake cleaner mixes with the fuel dregs and it evaporates very quickly indeed especially when warmed. Luckily the bmw tank has a 8" opening in it where the pump plate bolts on.

When I let them air out I just leave them in the sun for a couple of days but that doesn't work this time of year.

thanks for the suggestions guys, but I'm not doing the work myself, I simply don't have time or anywhere to do it.

Most suggestions would affect the garden where my 3year old plays and possibly damage our artificial grass (concrete yard when I moved in, chose not to try and remove it as it's likely grass wouldn't grow well wedged between terraced houses)
