I have the standard router from my isp which appears to be quite old and antiquated. I think the issues I've got with my computer maybe something to do with it and as I've also just joined the 21st century and got an internet TV I don't think the router is up to it as the signal is quite weak.

What's a decent router that won't particularly break the bank?

Cheers FS.

I'm rocking an ASUS DSL-N17U. Seems fine. Does most things.

I've put both the r6300 and the r6400 into a busy restaurant and they have been solid for the past year.

Zero problems, great performance.

Googling about I think the 6400 has identical internals as the 6300 which might be why.

The Netgear R7000 is probably the best router I've owned so far. One reason I got it was the support for DD-WRT. As for the extra cost, I got it in a sale.

OK. So a couple of questions.

How old is the isp router?
Which isp?
What problem with the computer? Doub't it has anything to do with router)
How do you connect computer to router & what else is connected. WiFi and hard wired.
What speed is your internet connection (NOT what is quoted but the sales blurb, what is actually showing.
Speed tester One of the better ones as it's UK based.

Its a TG582n and I've seen reviews in 2012 for it so 4 years max with plusnet.
Computer problem tricky. I bought it this time last year so quite new. Worked fine to begin with but now takes ages to load pages, if they load at all. Pictures don't show up, all sorts of issues. Running Win10 and messed with just about everything but nothing helped. Ran Ubuntu but it happened again so I thought it was hardware.

I currently run 2 tablets (wifi) and 2 computers (hardwired).

Anyway one day my new comp was titting about not loading and I unplugged my old comp and bang, the page loaded immediately. Everything ran fast but then stated slowing down again so I messed with the router again and it worked.

It doesn't seem to matter if I plug, unplug, move plugs around as long as I do something pages load immediately but then stop loading again.

The other day I was waiting for a page and accidentally unplugged the new comp and the page loaded? WTF?

I'm not saying it is the router but it's got something to do with it somehow. The speed is good at 65mb.

Another reason to look for a new router is I have a new TV that streams. The wifi is 48 mb upstairs, drops to 25mb downstairs and near the TV before less than 5. I was somewhat pissed off with the new telly when the picture was all pixilated but I put it down to wifi speeds.

When I'm surfing on the tablets wifi is fine.

So that's it in a nutshell, I looking at a router because I've essentially run out of ideas.

It won't be the router making the one computer slow.
Your speed is more than 10x mine and I have no problem with smart TV, Kodi etc.
You have to be wary of stuff downloading/uploading behind cenes - for example if you move something to Dropbox or Google Drive it can be using a fair chunk of bandwidth for ages while it syncs to cloud.
Your phone might be set up upload any new pics or video to Google Drive when on wifi but it will really make it sluggish for everything else.
Just an example of how it can be something less than obvious causing problems.

But I don't do any of that stuff, I've no idea what it is really.

Looking forward, what info should I take out of the settings on this old router that I will need to input into a new one?

A new router will not get you faster WiFi. That issue is related to the position of the router and the build of the house. Repeater would help. .

Sounds like your PC has a issue. Just what else do you, or anyone else do while you are suffering with slow loading pages.

I had a wrt54g
VM inet 50mb
only getting 40mb on a wired and wifi connection
bought wndr3700
getting advertised speeds on a wired connection, and vastly improved wifi speed.

turns out the wrt54g can only handle 40mb/s throughput.

TLDR: Bought new router, got better speeds on wifi and wired.

Nothing, nothing else needs to be running for the computer to slow down, and it's only the new computer, the old runs as well as always.

So that say that something on the new computer is slowing it down.
Just what do you have installed on it? or have running in the background.

Do any file sharing?

I have a couple of routers laying around from BT/Virgin internets that I never returned after switching.
Would either of these work (are they locked by the providers by any chance?).

Nothing it was completely new. Put the usual AVG, Spybot on it late to see if that could find anything but very little else. Quake live and Rainbow 6.

I've done a complete new install and still slow.

Are these games doing anything in the background?
It has been known, that some games install software that causes issues with slow loading pages.

Is AVG still on it? Turned into a bit of a bothersome resource hog recently.

With Windows 10 I wouldn't bother with Antivirus provided you are somewhat cautious with downloading and opening attachments.
It would be interesting to see if it magically speeded up with it temporarily disabled or removed anyway.

Call Plusnet, ask for a new router, if you don't get one threaten to leave. You'll end up with a new router that may solve your issue.

Well I've only gone and frikin done it. After months of having my new computer being crap slow, trying everything everyone advised on the net, and basically blaming software, then hardware then software again I bought a new router as a last ditch attempt and it's worked.

It maybe the size of a small suitcase and use more power than Blackpool lights but my computer rockets along now. My wifi is at full chat nearly everywhere and it's dual band so once I've swapped a few things over it will get even better.

Only issue I had was Sonos and after a quick call to them even that's working.

Why it only affected my new computer will forever be a mystery but I'm computer happy once more. Thanks for all the ideas over the last few months. Thumbs Up
