OK, so I've held my full license for all of 5 days. Went into a dealer today to look at a barely used Tracer 700. Asked if I could arrange test ride. Politely declined. Said trade insurance requires minimum 1 year full license for test ride. Offered to take me pillion instead.

Is the dealer trying one on?

I mean fair enough, I bought my first bike untested but that was on a provisional license and I had no insurance. But my insurance now covers me to ride other bikes with owner's permission.

Might try other dealers this weekend.

Entirely their prerogative, they don't have to give you a test ride and the conditions of such are also entirely theirs to enforce.

Look at it this way, fella walks in full of piss and vinegar just passed his test wants a go on your bike. Would you be happy for him to wobble off the forecourt on it?

Not comprehensively it doesn't. Not sure any dealer would fancy the five grand plus gamble that their bike is either coming back in one piece or you've got the necessary funds and attitude to make good if you bin it.

Has to be on their policy, really.

Must just depend on the dealer. They've been been entirely sanguine with me.

It's not unusual.
It's more unusual that you're spending so much on your 1st big bike.... Shocked

Common enough. If they're not offering anything in return for a dealer premium, your money is better of going elsewhere. You could tell them why they lost a sale, although I doubt they'll see it as the helpful information that it actually is.

Thanks, all very good points. I see their position now. Dealer is straight and offering good PX.

It isn't.

I'm not.

For the record, I have been riding for a many years, on many bikes on a full license. Just not in the UK/EU. My license was not transferable, hence the "re-take".

I bought a new car from a dealer when I was younger than their minimum age for their test driver insurance so the sales guy went and got his manager to phone the insurance company to sort out the insurance.

From that I'd assume that the dealer could sort it with their insurance company so that you can go for a test ride despite only having held a UK license for a few days.

Are you intending on buying from a dealer?

I was expecting that Very Happy OT, but said Tracer 700 is what I want. It's fairly new on the market and fewer so on the second hand market, mostly low mileage demos.

Sure, I could wait until summer to 'step up' but by then I think plenty others would be thinking the same and there would be even fewer bikes on the market. Plus, decent PX makes compelling reason for plan change.

Yes. I guess if I asked really nicely, they may sway. Not fussed really - just thought I would ask they question as the general advice here is to test ride, test ride, test ride.

Remember to factor in the fact that your 125 insurer might not want to insure a bigger bike ... cancellation fees / admin fees on insurance are a fackin' joke these days.

I moved over to a bigger bike the day my 125 insurance expired ... so got my full no claims, and maximum flexibility on picking a new insurance co.

In a car the salesman usually goes with you, can tame any recklessness (in theory)

Yeah the salesman came along on the test drive but it was my age that was the problem. The manager phoned their insurance people who wanted a photocopy of both parts of my license. Job done, test drive time.

Cheers. First call I made. £61.80 including amendment fee. Go figure.

Hear hear. I cancelled the insurance on my 125 in my haste to displacement-up, and was stung by a cancellation fee.

My current insurer is an absolute joke. A low premium, and I own the one-year policy on it, but they get dollar signs in their eyes whenever you contact them for any reason. I wanted to replace my headlight with streetfighter dual headlights. 'Give us monies', they said. OK, I suppose that's a modification, so just forget it, I said... I wanted to change colour to rat/Hammerite black after I scratched the tank.. 'Give us monies' they said. But wait, that isn't a modification, it's just a change of colour. 'OK, just give us £20 and let's call it quits', they said... Never mind, I said, I want to buy another bike, how much would it cost to cancel, I asked. Almost half the annual premium, they said... OK, screw that, how about a modification to the existing policy for a different bike, I asked... No problem, they said, that will be £n [which amounted to about three times the cheapest quote I could find on comparethemarket], they said. So I've decided to do nothing and just let the existing policy run out (6 months to go), and keep the bike as it is.

So, be careful when dealing with insurers. They're opportunists.

I'd turn up with the cash and wave it at them see if their policy suddenly changes.

they're only in the same boat as us, annual renewal comes around and get some quotes, if the broker or underwriter won't cover you then there's not much they can do, apart from explain properly or make the effort to at least try.

local dealer to me has ex-demo A2 licence bikes for sale with no mileage on them, as they can't insure for test rides under 25yrs old or less than 2 years experience, the only people who need an A2 bike!

Would you have bought it after the test ride assuming everything was good with the bike?

You could try going back and attempt to reason with them but if you have to hassle them when you're trying to buy the bike then it's probably best to go and find a different bike to buy.

There's 26 of them on eBay at the moment to choose from. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Motorcycles-Scooters/422/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=yamaha+tracer+700

I bought another car a few weeks ago. Rode the bike there, which I parked at the far end of the lot out of the way. Had a prod around the car, went in to ask a few questions. The salesman gave me the keys so I could look around it properly, and told me to take it for a drive if I wanted. He didn't even see my bike (asked me what I'd come on when I got back), so as far as he knew there wasn't even my vehicle left there as insurance that I'd be back.

On bikes, the local Honda franchised dealer was happy with me taking out a VFR 800 the day after I passed my test (were happy enough with the pass cert to say I was licensed as my license was in DSA Derek's shredder). A local independent wasn't, as their insurance wouldn't cover me. So quite variable.

I could suggest a sidecar but I'm not convince humour is the way to go.

Cheers. 15 of those are brand new. Dealer is local. Others are a good 2 hours ride. Time, money and all that. The test ride is not a deal breaker. Just wanting feedback whether the denial was commonplace. I see the argument from both sides.

I never had a test ride/drive as a pillion/passenger but there's always a first time for everything.
