So the parents are asking for something to get me, my current gloves I got for free because a retailer fucked up with a pair of my boots. They are summer gloves and are worn out to shit.

I need a new set of protective summer gloves, and waterproof winter ones.

I've done a bit of research, looked at the past posts etc and have tried some gloves on, but still a bit struck with option paralysis.

With summer gloves I would love some knox gloves, they look awesome but way out of budget. I tried on the a* GP pro something or other and they were bloody lovely, fit like a glove Rolling Eyes But then I looked at the price, way out of budget.
RST have a few options available, as do weise et al, and they all seem to be much of a muchness. Any in particular brands/models that are gastly or a steal. Price range is £40-£80.

Ideally I would spend all of my money the best (most protective and well made) set of summer gloves I can afford, and combine that with some heated grips and be toasty. Is that some fantasy, or is that a real option, if so is there any particular set of heated grips that are good, or are they all similar in performance?

I will probably pair that up with the cheapest warmest most waterproof glove I can find just incase there is a particularly shite day where normal gloves won't cut it.

I don't currently commute every day, and if the weather is utter crap I just don't go out. Cheers

Update
, found some gloves, see my post on page 2, thanks for all the advice chaps.

I just got some midseason ones, they seem decent enough for winter and I'll find out about summer soon enough, might be an option to consider if you want to save money?

If you get some midseason ones that are not too thick, they should do well enough with heated grips imo,

I have midseason ones with no heated grips and have ridden like 1200 miles in the past month, no issues, but then again I am a Lithuanian who laughs in the face of sub zero temperatures Smile

Hope that helps (as unlikely as that may be).
Thumbs Up

I have some RST summer gloves, cant remember the model name but they're black leather with knuckle protectors and short length.

The stitching inside the fingers is really rough, and leads to sore fingertips after long rides. Might be worth thinking about if you go for that brand.

My Hein Gericke winter gloves are brilliant, ive ridden through some god awful weather with them and still had comfortable, sweathy hands at the end of it Thumbs Up

Budget?

The ideal if you just want to get the best summer gloves you can and still be able to wear them in winter is muffs and heated grips.

Loads of great advice, going to nip off to essex bikers center, and maybe J&S in a bit and try on a load of these suggestions and see what feels the best in the hand.

Thanks a lot guys

Protection on a summer glove? Knuckle protection at most I'd guess based on what I've looked at in the past. I wouldn't be looking at a summer glove as something to use for other than short trips to the shops etc but then again if you fancy riding miles on end at all speeds then personal preference and all.

Summer gloves: RST Urban Air 2
Winter: RST Blade WP + Inner glove.

Winter advertised gloves are a load of old cobblers IMO and expecting the glove alone to get you through the worst and coldest of weather possible will be quickly shattered when the weather arrives and your stuck out in it with freezing hands and empty pockets (out of money). Bog standard WP glove plus thermal inner glove has done me well thus far and saved me much monies in trying to find a new pair.

Whatever recommendations you get are just what we own and get along with and in truth you wont know what you like or don't until you've used them out on the bike.

I've got about 4k miles on RST Blades, they haven't started to wear out, they aren't rough inside, leather and hard knuckles and with heated grips they are brilliant. They can be had for £50. They aren't waterproof but they allow plenty of feel. I haven't got any experience of the waterproof version but some say the lining gets pulled out of them easy.

I've got a set of Dane Ivik gloves, not much armour, but I don't plan on falling off much. Gore-tex and quite warm. Nice for winter. Priced around 60, cheap for a new gore-tex glove

Another vote for the Weise Daytona glove. They are made with the same if not better materials than A* gloves for a lot less money. The Daytona has kangaroo leather palms and all the armour you'd need. I've done around 12000 miles on mine and they have held up a treat.

Sorry, I may be referring to them wrong, but as far as I was concerned there were warm winter gloves, and then everything else was a type of summer glove. After a google that seems wrong I think, I am probably after the "race" styled gloves, but honestly I am not too picky on the styling.

Basically I just want the most protective and functional glove for the money, don't care about brand names or styling or summer/winter/other etc.
I have noticed that most if not all summer gloves stop at the wrist, but I wouldn't mind/would prefer ones with the part that extends past the wrist, like on the Knox handroids/weise shark wp etc.

Good points about the rest, I think I am getting some heated grips as a present, so I will either pair that up with a pair of the over handlebar muff things, or a cheapish pair of waterproof-ish gloves. I have some undergloves too to help.

Summer gloves that go past your wrist? Alpinestars GP-Pro's. Not cheap.
Grab a pair of silks off ebay. A fiver. You'll be amazed how much of a difference they make. In anything warmer than -5, I can ride to work with the aforementioned summer gloves on. These have cuffs, most of the cheap ones don't.

When you say summer gloves, do you mean a short glove or a thin leather sports glove?
Short gloves are great if you're whipping them off regularly, but, afford less wrist protection. Knox orsa have very long thumbs...I got rid of mine as they weren't a good fit. Have sports gloves (Arlen ness), but are very fussy to do up and get under/over jacket. Bit the bullet and am on my 2nd pair of dainese carbon short. Wore the 1st pair out in 2 years.
Winter gloves are where I struggle...warmth over feel. Gone for Five rxf4 (waterproof and comfortable) and weise wave wp (short but keep me dry). In very cold weather, pair of inners.

Same as Weise Daytona but Long cuff is called the Vortex. Bit dearer though.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Weise-Vortex-Gloves-Black-/371785814415?var=&hash=item569029518f:m:m9lE1Y-bTNK0ds0XKHg8Vww

They're my next pair anyway. I'd love a long cuff version of the same glove I already have. Pretty much the best protection
of all my gloves and fine with hot grips but the breeze up the sleeves is a bit much in Autumn.

Okay just to again clarify to everyone, by summer gloves, all I meant gloves that aren't winter gloves.

I don't mean thin or short or even cool. All that matters is quality (read: not shite) and safety.

The GP Pro, Handroid, etc are examples of the styling I had in mind (but on a budget).

The Vortex is a good shout, will have a try tommorow of that

You do know that most of the things that make winter gloves (the armour, the padding etc) are the things that make them safer?

Most Summer gloves will, at best, save your skin and will have armour to limit damage, but winter gloves will always be far superiour simply because of the padding/insulation on that front.

No I don't know that. Most of the winter gloves I have seen have a lot less armour than the other gloves I have seen. And as all of the "racing" gloves I have seen (gp pro, dainese full metal etc) look like summer gloves.

That being said, if there were some waterproof winter-y gloves that weren't too warm but were potentially safer than a race/summer style glove then I am open ears.

I just have/had a pre conception that the race/summer gloves would be the safest. Plus all of the winter gloves I have worn on cbt, a2 and borrowing some, have just made my hands too hot and sweaty, even in late winter/early spring.

My friend's knox fell apart on impact with the bars and front screen in an off. It ripped the whole panel off the top of the palm and exploded the glove leaving it with no protection whatsoever before he'd even hit the floor. He got very lucky to bounce in and back out of a bush otherwise down tarmac he'd have been like a used plate of chicken bones.

Another RST user here!
Not sure what model they are, they're gauntlet type with with armour!
Don't have to contend with rain these days, but they're definitely shower proof.
What I will say is they are the comfiest gloves I've ever had, there are no seams that dig into your fingers, no tightness around the fingers at all.
