If you received a letter that was the IRL equivalent of a YouTube death threat eg, just contains senders name, email and "I'm gonna kill you fuckface" (or similar). Would you take it to be any kind of legitimate threat or just some fucker dicking around?

I'd just think it was some sad sack. Probably send it to the po-po in case I ended up in box.

I'd assume that if anyone was serious about carrying it out, they'd just do it, rather than making threats that would lead po po straight to them.

Unless they're like this guy. NSFW https://youtu.be/nAq5aZSnf1k

These responses are what I'd expect, that it's no credible threat. Apparently though "threats to kill" is a serious violent offence with a max 10 years imprisonment. Apparently though it has a high burden of proof and is hard to convict, due to the fact most threats to kill are verbal and hard prove took place.

Hence why I would find it interesting to lay out all the physical evidence on a platter for the police/CPS, written letter, contact details etc only the whole thing is completely absurd by an normal measure when there's no prior/subsequent community between sender and recipient and they don't know each other.

Do you know the person whose name is on the threat? Do you think they sent it? Do you believe they will act on it? Do they know where you live?

Probably best not to handle the letter too much, or let anyone else handle it. put it in a food bag, give it to po-po.

The dip-shit might have left dabs on it.

Even if it's someone trying to have a laugh at your expense, they'll be laughing whilst looking over their shoulder...

Also, I believe the appropriate retort is

"I'll cut you, you slaaaaaaaag!"

Tell the cops just in case or you might regret it and wake up in a dark cellar hearing

Is this a hypothetical question, or are you "just asking for a friend"?

Cos if I did (personally), I would probably
(a) become more wary of who is lurking around in my street, and
(b) wait to see whether/how soon before matters escalated, and
(c) mention it to Plod, just in case.

... however, I'd say its usually the sort who don't tell you they're gonna do you in, who are more dangerous.
