Looking at getting a supermoto fairly soon.

Something like 450/525 EXC, anyone had a enduro converted supermoto?
Whats the maintenance like? Uncle has had a 51 plate 450 exc from new, regularly changed oil and filter and never had to do a rebuild.

I have a car so will be only riding it leisurely.

Maintenance - regular oil changes, but they don't take much.
Keep an eye on other stuff.

You are buying a competition race bike.

If you can, go for one sold for Supermoto use, but they tend to be rarer and the top-level-cc ones are often nicer for a bit of extra midrange.

Budget is around 3k, i know i can get a drz SM for that but ive rode one and i know ill get bored within a day.

If i stretch my budget i can start to look at 990 SM's and 990 Superduke's

990 is a very different beast.

A 690SMC or similar would be a midway between the two - similar weight and reliability to the DRZ, but more power than the EXC.

The EXC/SMR/ETC are noticeably lighter/more supermoto-ey.

You wont get an SMC for £3,000.

Though I've had my eye on this 690 Supermoto - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2007-KTM-690-LC4-SUPERMOTO-/142175012014?hash=item211a4a84ae:g:ULwAAOSwXeJYI0VO.

I'm currently in the market for a supermoto of some sort as a new bike, and the 690 series are the front runners at the moment.

This looks like a fair bargain as well - https://www.gumtree.com/p/ktm-motorbikes/ktm-690-sm-prestige-motorbike/1201574653

The 990 is just a big naked V-Twin, it's just KTMs version of the Tuono. They might call it a supermoto, but it really isn't IMO.

He mentioned stretching budget a bit - a 2011 690 SMC sold for £4k on ebay recently.

You'll have to stretch your budget alot to even start looking at superdukes tbf and as mentioned they really arent much of a supermoto as such.

I myself opted for the 640 Duke 2, paid £2.5k on an 03 plate, but it only had 8500 miles on it.

Much fun to be had once this rain pisses off....

I've got a 690 - enduro, but did have SM wheels.
Also previously owned a Husaberg 501 with both sets of wheels.

They are quite different - the 690 definitely feels much more of a 'road bike', while the competition bike feels, well, more like a competition bike.
So a lot less refined and not something you'd want to do any decent distance on*, but feels particularly svelte and agile.

Of course, come from a normal 'big bike' on the 138kg 690 is still pretty light.

*Though if you want to do decent distance on the KTM - get a better seat!

Always fancied a Husaberg 650. They're getting a bit long in the tooth now, but seemed to be the ultimate competition SM. Later models might last a few rides before blowing up too! The rest of the competition bikes don't really get much over 500cc, while this is a real 650cc in a light weight package.

The TE610 is also worth considering - later ones are similar to the 690.
The TE630 gained a bit of weight, so being the purist I'd probably stick to the 610 out of the two.

Prices should be reasonable these days.

Thanks G

Just trying to weigh up the options, its only going to be used for hoons here and there not really going to be doing long distance, im going to be servicing it regularly so just trying to decide whether the extra 800-900 is worth it for the 690

I spotted that SMC in Superbike Factory today too. Mileage and ghastly stickerjob put me off. They are the ultimate hooning bike though.

I'd be more thinking "Do I want an all-out nuts bike, or one that doesn't require as much attention, but isn't so focused".
Then when you've decided that, have a look around for possible bikes.

Of course, the more refined nature of something like the 690 might mean you actually ride it more - all well and good having great bikes, but if they don't get ridden, may not be worth it. (Yes, I know there's three fingers pointing back at me there!)

It's a proper competition bike, so frequent service intervals, but light and powerful.
Expect you may have to do some engine work at some point.
Being a SMR it should be a proper factory supermoto, which are generally a bit better than a converted bike.

The sort of thing to be looking at if you're aiming towards the most hardcore SM experience.

Don't think you get an electric book. Left hand kickstart. On a competition 576cc single. If it's setup right, it'll get a bit of getting used to and you'll be fine.
If it's not setup right or you're not great with kickstarts, you may find some issues.

My 501E had serious issues with the road legal can when hot (fine with louder one)- was at least glad the marshals etc at London Enduro track couldn't start it from hot either Smile.

Had a CRF450 before, was good fun but would be tempted by something more 'super' next time.

Better, but as above - unless you're limited by race capacity limits, might as well go bigger.

And might as well get one sold for SM if you can - unless you're also planning to do enduro on it as well.
