Passed by CBT and got myself a used CBF125 from a Honda dealer. Bike turned up in at the start of December at 7am. Was over the moon until I spotted they'd given me the wrong V5. After many phonecalls, it transpired they'd given me the V5 for another identical bike with a similar numberplate. I was assured all was getting sorted, and my numberplate was taxed and legal. I proceeded to insure and ride the bike...

All was well, then today, the logbook arrives from the DVLA, for the same wrong numberplate Sad Checked online, and my numberplate is currently SORN... Now waiting to speak to dealer tomorrow to get this mess sorted, can't ride bike in the interim. To say I'm mad is an understatement. Evil or Very Mad

So you've been riding illegally (through no fault of your own) and been at risk of prosecution,I think they should give you some free stuff to compensate for their bellendry.

Couldn't agree more! ...and I'm potentially liable for any speeding tickets for the other numberplate I'm now the registered keeper of!

But you bought from a dealer, you've got peace of mind.

I'm hoping the owner of the other bike will be relatively local too, we can then hopefully just then sign over as if we've just sold them to each-other.

Don't do that because you're meant to be the first owner of the bike.

Check the frame number with the V5 to confirm that they've given you the wrong number plate rather than the wrong bike.

Ta. They are both used bikes though - I checked the frame number with them and it matches my number plate, just that they sent the bikes out with the wrong logbooks. Will see what they have to say tomorrow, they might be able just to cure with a call to the DVLA.

Cant you just swap numberplates over for a small fee and claim it back from the dealer?
This would stop an added owner being on the logbook.
Youd then only need to take the logbook you have over to halfords and get a plate made.

Dealer needs to contact DVLA and get them to correct the details for the registered keepers.

I'd be on the phone to the dealer at 9am tomorrow morning or even go there in person because otherwise you'll be waiting til after the bank holidays next week.

Complaining at Honda UK and the dealer on facebook & twitter is another way of getting their attention. Right now your bike is registered in someone elses name and their bike is registered in your name and you need the dealer to sort it ASAP so that you're road legal. The other person might not have noticed yet that something's wrong.

Most annoying thing is I told the dealer before they sent off the logbook to the DVLA. Yup, needs to be sorted by them, can't just swap plates over as the logbook isn't just the numberplate, it is the age of the bike, the previous owners, the chassis number etc. etc.

Was told the chap that deals with it would be in by 10, so I'll phone then and report back. Was thinking of driving over (by car!) to make sure it gets done, but the weather today ain't great (they're over an hour away from here).

I feel there is some fault here, it's up to the driver/rider to make sure their vehicle is properly taxed/insured and the plate is stuck to the bike so knowing there'd been a cock up with the V5 from the start the details for the bike in his possession should have been checked rather than the one on the V5.

Re: blame - the dealer told me in no uncertain terms it was taxed, I got it insured, I did everything I reasonably could be expected to do. Yup, I accept I would still have been liable.

Anyway, could take 4-6 weeks to get the documents so I can get this one taxed and legal, so I've asked them to collect the bike and refund me Sad Phoned the DVLA to get my name taken off the bike I don't own. Time to start bike hunting again...

They're happy to do so. Hopefully getting collected next week.

Now bought myself another used CBF125 from somewhere else, getting delivered hopefully first week of Jan. Went down and had a look at the bike - compared reg/engine/chassis numbers against logbook this time Smile All a pain, but you live and learn.

And are they going to pay the "admin fee" for moving your insurance to the new bike?

Mark it down to experience, put it behind you and enjoy your biking days. Life's too short.
