I agreed a price on this bike https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/kawasaki-versys-650/291979620553

I then got a lift on the back of my Dads bike to go and pick it up.

In the pictures it looks pretty decent - I think they must be old pictures. The inner rotors are rusted to fuck in real life, the oil looks like treacle, the pannier racks are corroded and badly painted over, the boxes themselves scuffed. The chain is a non o-ring with a split link, the bike itself an ex-hire with 'finance just paid off' and generally pretty tatty.

There is a 4" patch on the rear rim with paint missing, from what appears to be being hammered round again and then sanded smooth. Now, the bike was absolutely filthy, and when I asked him why there was paint missing, he claimed it was from him polishing it Laughing More likely is a dented rim, damaged tyre and cheap (brand new) replacement tyre - possibly because it doesnt hold air.

So basically, don't waste your time viewing it unless you get it dirt cheap.

Oh and the geez looks like father jack, with a confrontational attitude problem.

I never really understood the Versys, you may as well get the ER6, or am I missing something?

Had reply 'Are you being serious'

My reply

'Yes. Custard test is a recognised check to ensure bike/car is as described. Google it.'

'Well I don t eat custard so will baked beans do? Can t do pictures right now as it is covered up and dark. Will do tomorrow and upload for you. Strange request but ok'

'Baked beans will do'

Lets see what we see on the pictures....

Bigger, retuned, but not a lot in them really. I had one before and liked it.

Lol @ custard test. He tried to cover up the wheel damage by positioning it at the top, behind the swingarm. Interested to see if he makes an effort and cleans it up - front wheel especially looked like it hadn't been cleaned in 5,000 miles.

The best picture, his headline picture, shows the bike under a cover! Why am I not surprised it's showing 'wear and tear'!!

Versys is a lot more spacious. I am well cramped on an ER at 6'2, but comfy on the Versys.

Second hand the Versys tends not to to hold its money as well as the ER 6 (overlooked a little) and as said more spacious with better luggage capability from the get go, I was seriously considering buying a friends generation one earlier this year for not much £ (he loves it now though and is shifting his R1200RT to keep the Versys for European touring, says he finds it more fun to ride Shocked ).

Nah, he saw your awesome pictures and knew he couldn't produce anything close to that authentic.

I figured as much.

Look at the price... for that price, you're lucky to even get a working bike let alone a fairly modern one like a Versys. You could have probably knocked him down on price when you went to visit and uncovered those problems. For £648, surely it looks about right, or better.

Oh, I see. Maybe he'll smarten it up a lot before the auction ends. Judicious use of a rattlecan to mask any issues, etc. The rear wheel sounds bad. If aluminium is bent them hammered back into shape, there could be cracks in it. Not good for a rear wheel! If he sprays both his wheels matt black it will be a dead giveaway...

This, also it's better to tour on too.

£2,300. The reserve was £2,500, which it didn't meet - I haggled from there. Yes, admittedly it's a fair price for a private sale bike - a dealer would want £3k+ - had it been in the condition assumed from the photos. However, it wasn't, and I wasn't prepared to hand over any money for it, personally.

I could always bid a couple of thou, win auction and then refuse to purchase when I turn up and find out that the bike is a hanging piece of shit and doesn't look like the ones in the pictures....

As I'm sure you realise, I didn't use my ebay account for the questions. My name isn't Claudia....

Compared to the er6 the versys is the better bike, I say that as an er6 owner who nearly bought a versys but got the er6 cause it was miles cheaper (nice lightly used er vs new versys). Suspension is slightly higher end, bigger and more spacious, better luggage options, better handling due to wide bars. Like a big supermoto. Er6 has a slightly stronger top end butbthe versys is runed for more low down torque. The er6 is a bit squirrelly on bumpy roads and at higher speeds, not so with the versys. I'd definitely take a versys if buying again.
