Has anyone had any dealing with these chaps as a Shoei dealer? They are listed as a Shoei Assured Dealer so part of the service when buying a new lid is they are supposed to be able to custom fit the lid.

I dont know much about them or how well trained the staff are.

I've spent a fair wad of cash with them this year. They've been really helpful. Wouldn't knock them.

Nige by any chance?

I like most of the infinity stores I've been as they are helpful and available if you have questions but not at all pushy. They tried to slang me oxford chains once but when I said I was getting an almax they immediately said good choice even though they don't stock them.

One I've been to (holborn) was really good, that's where I bought my leathers, and my shoei visor.

I've dealt with the York store quite a lot and also bought a Shoei from them (on sale of course). I've always found them to be knowledgeable and friendly without being pushy, they're all bikers not salesmen. I'm somewhat infamous for trying on lids in there (massive Phil Mitchell head, nothing ever fits right) and they are always on the ball with fitting.

Apart from offering different thickness cheek pads from those that come in any given helmet size, what can they do to "custom fit" a helmet?

Pretty much, "that one's too big for you mate"....."try this one".

They are well versed in the 'type' of head each brand fits though, I'm well aware of the abundance of brands that don' fit my noggin thanks to them.

The custom fit service is free when you purchase a new Shoei helmet.
Step 1 is getting the right shell size, step 2 is internal padding being custom fit for your head. It may just be some different size padding but as you spend hours at a time inside the helmet then every little bit extra comfort is welcomed.

I went to infinity in norwich to get my helmet... Bob was the guy who dealt with me... Was a really nice bloke. Spent a lot of time with me to find the right fitting helmet.

I ended up getting a small sparda one that fit the best. Even though Im more a medium large head. Just happens to be the lid that worked best for me.

Will be shopping with them again in the months to come now im riding.

Got my Shoei Neotec from them in Glasgow, large a little snug around my cheeks, XL too loose, so fitted large with slimmer pads, day before I bought a Shoei Air, but on getting it home and keeping it on for a while, decided it pinched the top of my head, took it back next day and they exchanged it for the Neotec (with me adding cash) no problem, at no time were they pushy or did I feel rushed, and all bikers, I'd happily buy from their Glasgow store again, this store was a Heine Gericke store prior to be bought by infinity, dunno if this made a difference, so can't vouch for the others.

I don't think I've ever seen a helmet with a choice of liner size, other than the cheek pads. So presumably you would check that any helmet you're considering gives you a good crown fit in the first place. Once you have this, then you can consider the cheek padding (assuming the helmet you choose has an option in pad sizing - not all do). Cheek pads are usually just a matter of popping one set out, a different set in - again, I don't know of any helmet where any further adjustment is possible. "Custom fit" just seems a bit strong a term to me. Advising a customer on fit is something else again.

Any helmet with interchangeable sizes in cheek pads should be able to be sold with this "custom fit" service, not just Shoei.
Maybe I'm just being pedantic Smile

Usually get my bits in the Holborn store or the Farnborough one and all staff in both have always been very helpful.

There was some tidy little eastern European chick working in the Holborn one the other week too, which is always a bonus.

Twas Holborn I used too. Really helpful guy, and got lucky with a fifty quid voucher off Shoei.

I couldn't decide on which jacket I wanted - one came with back protector and one didn't but preferred the one that didn't, but wanted a back protector. They threw one in.

When I got a pinlock and new visor for my arai from them (they are also an Arai service centre), I couldn't get the pinlock to fit so came back with it.

"Oh, you just need to get a screwdriver on the pins and rotate them."

"On you go then. I'm not going near a brand new visor with a screwdriver in my hand.". Was my reply.

After a degree of umming and erring and me pointing to the Arai service centre sign, he fitted it but didn't look happy.

People who work in motorcycle clothing and accessory departments generally don't get anything much in the way of training in my experience. Hopefully, they'll get the job in the first place because they can show a reasonable level of knowledge to a prospective employer, and then they will try to pick up more from more experienced colleagues, sales reps and anyone else who can fill them in on a few details about the products they sell, but it's pretty much all learned off your own back. There are many comments here about "these guys seemed to know what they were on about", but they probably figured most of it for themselves through their own experience of products.

Accessory manufacturers will be quick to encourage retailers to adopt "service centre" labels, but I wonder if they'll actually then offer much in the way of product training. It'll probably be more like, if you become an 'x-product' service centre, we'll give you more discount on your orders.

The only dealer I ever worked for that did make an effort in product training was actually Carnells - and they desperately needed to, as they weren't terribly particular in who they hired in the first place. But they went down the pan shortly after they started this anyway Rolling Eyes

I would go so far as to suggest that many people on this forum would be equally good at motorcycle accessory sales, if not better in many instances, than those who actually do the job. But that's your own fault for not applying for those jobs yourself Laughing Well, yes, the money is shit generally speaking, but that's largely because it's not a highly skilled position Wink

Arai do.

Having spent a considerable time discovering the right size, shape and fit for my Chaser V, when it arrived it was too big.

The dealer (in my case, Helmet City) then messed about, mixing and matching different thicknesses of liner and cheek pad, until it felt just right.

My first road helmet was made by a company called Owens, who made their name producing various types of safety headgear for armed forces.

It had a leather lining and it was fitted by an old guy who literally placed his hands over my skull, then went and selected what he considered was the correct size; any slight imperfections were corrected by inserting slivers of foam and then gluing them when they were in exactly the right place.

That was the best fitting lid I've ever owned, the downside being it was made of hand laid fibreglass and weighed about 4 tonnes!
