Hello everyone! I hope you are all well!?

I'm new to this forum and hoped I can pick someone's brains to help identify a issue I encountered with my motorcycle this morning pretty please!

So I have a Speed Triple 1050, which I love dearly. I started the bike up this morning (it was a little cold) and it was running fine as usual. I always let the bike warm up a little before I set off to ride, always been a habit of mine.

The problem is when I normally pull away with my clutch, basically using clutch control I normally get going fine. Obviously I'll just be going slow till I add power then let off the clutch. This time if I drop into 1st gear and release the clutch a little it turns the whole bike off completely, then a couple of seconds later it turns itself on again =S if I start it up still in gear with clutch in its fine, then again as soon I release it at all it turns off. Unless I add more revs to actually pull away it's not a problem.

When I was riding it around it was absolutely fine, till I got to my destination and had to use more clutch control to maneuver it turned itself off again. I haven't got any engine lights on, spark plugs, air filter, oil and oil filter were changed less than a year ago too.

Can anyone enlighten me what may be causing this please? I contacted Triumph and they didn't seem to have any clue what it may be, they reckon it's not a common issue and when looking online I must admit I can't find any information that relates to my particular concern.

Thank you for reading and hope you're having a great day!

sounds like the clutch switch may be slightly corroded or in need of a clean and lube

Thanks, I'll double check that! Would that really cause the bike to completely turn off electronically?

While being able to ride it doesn't quite add up, I'd also check the side-stand cut out switch.

These can often easily get crudded-up over winter and would make sense for what you describe more than the clutch switch.

If it thinks you have the sidestand down, it will cut the engine as soon as you let the clutch out, so you don't ride away like that.

Thank you! I checked my sensor and gave it a once over. I'm still having the same problem.

I think it would make more sense to me if the engine was the only thing to cut off but the bike literally turns itself off completely. I checked my cut off switch which is fine also.

I can't seem to identify why it only does it when releasing the clutch a little, I normally can just use clutch control fine with no problems. It's only started today so very confused =S

Ah, good point on the whole thing cutting out.

Unfortunately I think it's multimeter time.

I'd be starting with the kill switch circuit.

Have you got a paddock stand you could get the back wheel up to help test it?

Hello! I don't have a rear paddock stand, I may have a friend who does so can always borrow one if worse case scenario I'd buy one.

I can check if the kill switch is what's the route to the problems but if it's not that what else would you think could be the cause for this? It's too early to tell I know but keeping my fingers crossed it's nothing serious =S thank you for your help!

I came across a similar problem in a little Suzuki VanVan. The bike died during low speed manoeuvres.

The problem was a broken wire inside its insulation, where a big bundle of wires runs past the headstock. While the bars were pointed mostly ahead is was fine, but at full lock the wire was being strained just enough to pull the two ends apart.

I have also seen it happen where that same wiring bundle chafes against the headstock and wears through the insulation, allowing the wires to short against the headstock.

Before going into too much detail looking at the clutch, see if the handlebar position has any relevance. Try the same sort of movements, but with the bike in neutral and not touching the clutch.

I think I had something similar to that which Robby mentions on my zx9r - unfortunately mine was a lot more random than that.

You don't need a paddock standard, especially if it's repeatable; but does make it easier in a case like this.

My ZX9 issue was so random I ended up breaking the bike for parts!
(Did also need a new second gear amongst other things and had some fairly tasty race parts on it.)

Actually, as a temporary solution, I'd start with taking the clutch switch off (or setting it so it thinks the clutch is always out). Be careful of course as you can now start it in gear etc.

If this works fine, it also does suggest it's that circuit that has the issue.

Evening! Just got a chance to check the bike and you're right. When I move the steering it cuts off the engine and dashboard. The main lights stay on however, which is good I suppose!

Can anyone guide me towards the parts I'll need please?

Thanks you for all your help again, I should of noticed it when steering! Doh!!

They to narrow down which wire it is rather than the turn the bars to make it cut out pull the different wires and see when it goes.

It seems to be the one that connects to the part where I insert my key, I assume the ignition. As soon I move it the dashboard is off...I had the ignition changed in dec/Jan by triumph, I seem to always have one problem after another with them. Either coincidence or I'm beyond unlucky.

Does that help identify the cable?

I'd guess that would disappear under the tank.

Take the tank off and find where it plugs into the loom, make sure it is connected well, give it a clean and check. If it isn't the connector have a good check visually for any possible issues, worn insulation, bent wire etc.

If you still can't sort it you'll have to narrow it down to the specific wire and see if you can check for breaks. I imagine the lock barrel end you can access any of the contacts so I doubt there is a way of testing it beyond wiggling the individual wires, possibly looking at a wiring diagram would give you a better idea.

Thanks for your help, I'll have to check it out tomorrow when I've got daylight to work with! Hopefully it's just a matter of something being loose as opposed to a broken wire =/ if I find a wire is broken is it recommended to purchase a new one or just solder? I suppose it depends how bad of course but thought to ask as not sure how reliable a solder would be...

OK! So I found the problem, it's a broken yellow wire part of the loom that goes inside the ignition. It's broken just at where the wires lead inside the ignition block.

From what I can observe the bottom part is kept on with clips, I've tried looking for just the bottom part with the wire loom online but can't find it =S may someone be so kind to help me find that part please?

I'll go to Triumph about this to see if they'll cover it as I had the whole ignition replaced around a year ago, I'd like to think it should be covered by a guarantee but won't know till a later date as they are closed. Though if they won't be good to know the part I need, thanks everyone!

And Happy new Year!!
