Just using it to fill a bit of time through the winter months, while I'm not out on the bikes. I haven't done anything like this since I was a kid at Junior school, when I used to love it. I think I had more imagination back then though.

Got a couple of ideas on the shelf, and one that actually seems to be progressing. Harder than I thought! Gotta say, I am enjoying it though. I've always enjoyed writing, when I've felt I had something to write about. I wonder if this is the start of something significant, or will I just lose interest, like I seem to with most things I try my hand at nowadays? Rolling Eyes So I don't think I'll convert the spare room into a cosy writing space just yet!

Applies to creative writing.....

When do your juices run? Are you the late at night worker, the early morning type. Do you slog through the 'block' or are you sporadic?

See, I'm an intensely sporadic type. I work fast when inspiration strikes and will keep working until I'm out of time or too tired. I use a notepad or sometimes use my phone to capture ideas in readiness.

You may prefer approaching it like a job with set hours.

I seem to be doing it in 'micro bursts' at the moment, mostly through the morning. I'm told that as long as I keep at it, it'll get easier...
I keep mulling over my story in between though, and I've even had to resort to a bit of subject research for some of it. A subject that actually fascinates me, thankfully. So it's also given me a pile of reading to do Smile

Strangely enough, for guitar playing, I'm more of an evening/night type Confused

I don't want it to become a chore. As long as I'm actually doing it, I won't set myself more of a target than to actually write something each day at the moment.

I write short stories sporadically. Silly things, a few years ago I wrote an annual series of "Christmas in Crisis" stories for friends. Varying with the times using the big stories of the year to build the stories. The last one was 2009

Quote:
i bring you sad news. it would appear once again xmas will have to be cancelled. over the years i have reported various disasters, from rudolphs untimely death on a test flight through to the elven strikes in the toy factory. thankfully none of these caused xmas to be cancelled but this time i fear the worst.

after emergency talks last year the elves agreed to return to work in the toy factory. santa clause agreed safer working conditions and a 5% pay rise to each elf. tihs year however, the credit crunch has hit Clause enterprises hard. his factory has gone into liquidation and thousands of elves have been made redundant. mr clause has issued the following statement.

"it has been a hard year for me. finacially and economically. with the closure of woolworths, one of our major toy companies, we have had reduced orders. as a result i have been unable to meet the demands set last year by the elves and have had to close my main toy making factory. i fear we may not be able to complete many of the orders the children have left with us in their letters. Mrs clause and i are saddened by this latest development in the ongoing difficulties we have had throughout the years."

other reports have reached my office claiming that the Clause estate has also been repossessed by the bank, which has released the following statement:

"we can confirm that the clause family has failed repeatedly to pay the mortgage for their north pole estate. it has saddened the bank managers to reposses the home of the man who has been known as father christmas by families for generations. but saddly we were left with no choice."

with the clause estate in liquidation and the elven factory closed i fear xmas will not happen this year. i have seen on ebay santa's sleigh is already for sale.

I'm working on a fantasy novel at the moment but it's hard going, The seed is in the mind and I have not committed any plan to paper yet as the moment I do is the moment I have to actually start writing. I know where I want the story to go, I know where it ends, (book 1 at least of 2 or 3) and I know some of the middle bits, But I'm struggling with some of the characters. I've given a few life but some are still very wooden and with no history, When I have their history sorted I'll start jotting.

I tend to get more creative when I am away from the computer, I tend to forget them when I get back to the computer, so I should start recording stuff down on voice.

One thing I have learned, Have a set plan and be prepared for it to run away from that goal. If you have solid characters you'll be writing their life down for want of a better analogy, They change and develop as you make them "real." Give them history so you can work their future. "would this happen because X happened years ago? Probably not so....." Tends to happen. I've scrapped full stories because half way through the lead character wrote himself into a creative corner. There was nowhere to go that was feasible. So it went in the bin.

It'd be hard to for me to follow that with anything short of a spectacular death, so don't get your hopes up, and don't hold your breath!

Hmm, I hadn't considered poetry Laughing

Interesting stuff there, pinky.

The ideas I've got so far are little more than that. One is just a title; an abbreviation in fact, but I feel there's a story in there somewhere!

The one that I seem to be getting somewhere with I think will be a short story, although conceivably it could go further. But short stories seem to be a good place to start - learn to walk before you run kinda thing. I just have this situation that came to mind whilst reading something else, and thought, "what if...?" Which Stephen King seemed to think was a good place to start from, even if you couldn't see where it would lead. This particular tale isn't heavily character-based, so hopefully not too many problems on that score. I've got to be careful with some of the scientific stuff though. I wonder how much of that bit I can be creative with? It's a fantasy type thing, so I don't suppose it's too important, but I'd like to give it the ring of truth.

Always base the contraptions on real things, it connects a reader. I've read fantasy done with weaponry, it has to be based in real world machines, LE Modesitt Jnr has a series "Recluse" and some of the stories focus around steam type engines, tanks etc. It gives you something to connect with as a reader. Dont over complicate things with them, readers are, for the most part, simple beings who paint images in their head from your words. Having them going "Nope, it'll never work like that." will frustrate readers and stop them reading.

If you look at almost every fantasy book they follow rules, The rules connect the reader. Hero, Dark Lord, etc. Weaponry is either classical swords and horsemen, the long range is rifle based contraptions, catapults or even magic. It using magic to blow up whole armies and end a battle is too far fetched for a reader so strategic use to launch fireballs at parts of armies is more believable.

If it's just a seed in the mind with no real direction have a play with it, Where can you take the characters, The basic seed of mine in the first book starts off with the epic final battle as the prologue. Where most high fantasy ends mine begins. It opens on a battlefield and the prologue ends with the "hero" getting slaughtered and the "dark lord" winning and plunging the world into a dark time.

Chapter 1 starts a few hundred years later in a very bleak harsh world. It's going to be gritty, it's going to be dark, and going to be everything LOTR isnt.

But it's for the future to pen.

Well, when I say fantasy, it's a fantasy idea dropped into a real life, if slightly exotic, situation. So yeah, I guess the science has to be pretty accurate, but I don't want to bore the reader with a scientific manual. But I agree, some is necessary for the story to work.

I used to.
But my creative juices pretty much dried up with the advent of the internet.

I'm struggling with The Serial Killer Convention, and my autobiography fizzled out when I realised I'd have to look rather too closely at my formative years than I wanted to.

But it's there if I want to take it back up again soon ... maybe, uhmmmmm ... Shifty

I always wanted to write for a living. I get an idea stuck in my head, start to develop it until I have a solid plot basis. Then I sit down, power out the first few chapters and then never go back to it.

Ffs, no one warned me that the best ideas would come steaming along at 3 o'clock in the bloody morning, and that you had to get them down while they were fresh in the mind! I hope to Christ it turns out to be worth it. Probably it'll go nowhere, but I've got some hope for this one. "Write about what you know" they said. We'll see...

Oh yeah that happens, Or you wake up with something in your mind and if you do not get it penned before you pee you will forget, Standing there cross legged scribbling something down is always interesting.

It came to me as an almost complete package (I realised I'd been sitting on it for some time without knowing it), but not the ending. There's a strong hint of where it'll go at the end, but not a clear picture. I'll try to get writing anyway, and hopefully there'll be another flash of inspiration as it progresses, although one or two doubts have already crept in. I hope it isn't too derivative, but actually, in the cold light of day I am a little cynical. If only I can really make something of the end!

Well, I've read through what I wrote last night, and I actually quite like it Shocked Not sure that means much though. Fleshed out the plot with some further details today, and it came easily - a good sign perhaps?

Always finish what you've started is the recurring theme from a lot of creative types. I learn from the good and the bad but learn very little when I walk away from a piece.

The juices are flowing. Thumbs Up

I've shelved a few ideas - for now. They're still there, in case something comes to me to advance them though. I'll try not to be too disappointed with any of them, as long as I'm writing something. That has been the difficult bit I've found; just to keep writing something, any bloody thing!
