Is it me or are used prices getting silly?, I am still looking for a bigger bike, I looked at 2 yesterday, first one was a tidy bike apart from tyres and chain, part x my 300 I thought, then I saw they were only about £5500 brand new, I did like this bike but Suzys dont seem to have a good rep in the winter.

https://www.racewaysmotorcycles.co.uk/pages/used/used-bikes/2013-63-SUZUKI-GSX650F-650cc/57ff5ef88b58c9d4.htm

then I thought keep my 300 for its nippy 92mpg and look for a older bigger bike for nice weather, so I saw this, again very tidy and low mileage but its near enough 12 years old and again chain looked shit and marks on the bars and top yolk from keys.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-FZ6-FAZER-2005-2owners-6323miles-/142233144919?hash=item211dc18e57:g:21AAAOSwa~BYa8m8

and having a mooch I saw this, £2000 for a 16 year old bike?

Am i expecting too much here?.

Dealer pricing rules - everything is worth £2k. They've washed it, don't you know?

Used pricing is still very strong, though. Works both ways, of course. If you buy at £3k it may be £1k more than you wanted to spend, but it's only going to cost you £500 in depreciation a couple of years or so onwards.

No but the people who priced those bikes are. Razz

What price a bike is advertised at doesn't mean that's what it actually sells for and it doesn't mean that's how much you could expect to be able to sell it for tomorrow.

However if you want the convenience of PXing your old bike, 3 months warranty, finance, etc etc etc then that lot comes at a premium.

I genuinely think that Thief-Bay sellers are in the main VERY GREEDY and or deluded as to what the bike they are selling is worth.
You can see that by the length of time some bikes remain for sale on the site.

My own relatively recent experience of this is that used prices are indeed silly high - yet that nothing is selling. So eh. I think there's a lot of hope and not much reality - I'm talking about both private and dealer here btw. And north of the midlands. No idea what's happening elsewhere.

I tried to price a bike to sell and thought I was pitching it about right, as I'd checked all the current listings on eBay. Fuck all happened when I placed my own listing - even though I was under the apparent going rate by half a grand. So then I did what I should've in the first place which was of course to check completed listings. Sure enough there were about one tenth as many sales as there were bikes of the relevant make and model that hadn't been bought. Maybe even a twentieth. So I came down by nearly a grand iirc, and that's when I found a local cash buyer.

I know one or two habitual buyer/seller/flippers/hobby-dealers locally and when I recounted my experience they said yeah everything was slow as fuck: sellers with unrealistic expectations and hesitant buyers. Mind you this was at the end of last season so I suppose it's possible things have started to move - but given it's the dead of winter I somehow doubt that. More likely it's worse than ever.

Its probably artificially inflated by Mr bike owner promising Mrs bike owner that he will try and sell it...

List it at silly price...

"Sorry love it didnt sell, will try again next year."

Yep.... 12 Year Old bike is not going to be perfect. You could haggle a new chain and sprocket set in the price. Less than 2K a year....
It's screaming out to be used & loved Laughing

Did ask but he would not drop below £2700, I would have prolly gone for it at £2300, it would most likely want swing arm re greasing, headset the same, fork oil changing and coolant just to start with. I do like them especially the zaust under the seat out of the way which im assuming is stainless?.

probably .. Crying or Very sad

the prices of new bikes went skyward from 2008.. exchange rate was blamed..

fewer sold + higher prices = higher secondhand values ..

also there is a propensity amongst older riders to keep bikes ; the sort you are lookin for; even though they buy more... Crying or Very sad

And this....

Have you tried looking on Gumtree?

From what I've seen, there's a short window in October/November (I won't use it in the winter, but could use the cash) and again in March (Am I going to the expense of MOTing it and not being allowed to use it again this summer... But I could use the cash) when a few more deals turn up but summer (it's sunny, buy a bike = strong prices) and winter (Don't sell in winter, so limited bikes = strong prices) aren't great.

Yes bikes from dealers are silly expensive, but you shouldn't be worried about how old a bike is, as much as what condition it's in.
Unless you're effected by a ULEZ issue.

Too many people buying bikes because it's new and low miles (Previously owned by a use/abuse owner then chucked on quickly maybe) rather than getting an older bike that's clearly been in the hands of someone that's enthusiastic about that bike.
Even private sales can be expensive but there are deals out there for cash buyers.

At the risk of sounding like a broken Tef, if you can see a bike for sale, it's because nobody thinks it's worth the asking price.

If you want a bargain, have your budget ready in cash, scour eBay, Gumtree (and I suppose Failbook groups) several times a day, and get in there like a MP on an expenses claim.

Buying from a dealer will cost you at least £500 over private sale / private purchase, probably more like £1K if you're P/Xing. That's the price of peace of mind convenience. They're not charities.

Also at risk of sounding like a stuck record.

Cash ready, nice big pile of notes.

Scan gumtree and eBay at every opportunity. The moment you see a possible appear phone up and arrange to see it at the first opportunity you can possibly manage (and I'm talking same day/night here).

If bike checks out wave lowball cash offer at seller (literally wave the wad of notes at them it's like waving crack infront of an addict). Mention you will hand them that money now, no messing around with fake bidders or gumtree chancers offering an xbox and bucket of staffie pups.

The above method works. I'm currently thrashing the tits off a low mileage, tidy K1 GSXR 1000, dripping with fancy extras that I bought for less than the price of a ropey 750 SRAD.
