It's already in cars - will bikes be next to get them?

Black box threat from EU
The threat of a 'black box' being fitted to every new motorcycle has come a step closer with an EU request to police forces to test the technology.
The results will be used to help the EU decide whether or not to force manufacturers to add the data recorders to every new vehicle on the road.
The boxes would reveal how fast you had been going and braking forces in the moments before an accident.
And that's scary enough for most. But road organisations are also warning the technology could be used to track your speed at all times - automatically issuing tickets if you stray over the limit - or even cutting your engine to limit you by force.
The Metropolitan Police in London are among a number of police forces already using the recorders in their cars. They say they have helped cut the number of accidents police vehicles are involved in.
Evidence from a data recorder has already been used to prosecute a driver in the US. The computer that controls the airbag in some modern cars can store what happens just before the airbag was set off. And prosecutors in the US used this data to convict a man of dangerous driving.

So as we head down the path where new cars are fitted with speed recorders (which as mentioned, could be used at all times - not just after accidents) are bikes next on the hit-list? Prepared to do anything about it?

Have you heard the new one.

We are all being fitted with brain implants that detect when we are likely to do anything at all and if you can be fined or taxed for it you will be 'done' automatically, but if you only think of the action you will get a mild electric shock to stop you. (Unless it's taxable!)

Fu**ing country is turning into a nanny state!

Time to move abroard where you can do anything you like.

I personally am amazed that the human race has managed to survive for so long. We are obviously all incapable of living normally! Evil or Very Mad

If that comes into force nobody will buy a bike. TBH. Only for usage of commuting nothing else.

I'd say it's infringement of human rights being tracked, but hey ho nothing I can do about it. Rolling Eyes

Could be potentially dangerous to cut a bikes speed or cut the engine if your stray over the limit. The rider won't know what hit them!

Biker fatality rates to go through the roof!!??

Whatever next...........?

That's why cc123 joined the BMF and why you should do the same. Both the BMF and MAG have been telling you all about this for years.

There's nothing anyone can do if it actually comes in. But whilever we've got human beings making these technoligical breakthroughs, we'll have more resourceful human beings finding ways to get around them Very Happy

There's been talk about this for a few years now, while there are serious safety issues as well as human rights issues if it goes through all you can do is fight against it through lobby groups.

Don't want to get into too much of an argument here, but just how have they been telling you all about it.

Don't you mean they've been telling BMF and MAG members about it for years?

Personally I can't see the point of anything to remove power on a bike as it's a safety issue (also for cars). A black box can't judge when it's safe to do this.

As for the recorder part, a true black box is like a loop tape, it'll only record the last x minutes from the sensors before starting again. I think the cost would be main problem, expect commuter scooters to be exempt Mad

I know they've got this sort of thing in the USA. Worried parents can buy one for their kid's car. If they go over the speed limit or abuse the car (lean angle sensors, braking, etc) there's an audio beep warning. Don't know if it's implemented but there was talk of including mobile phone so it could call parents or parents could call it and turn the car off.

Don't go down the whole BMF/MAG member/non-member argument type thing again peeps!!!! Thumbs Up

I can't see them doing this personally myself. It's lunacy again. If I had a sensor on my car, the thing would be cutting in every minute of everyday slowing me down. The majority of people in this country speed.

Fran, I agree. BB is watching us all!

They did something on fifth gear or something similar a while ago where some bloke drove a car that was limited to 70. He got so bored they said he was actually more dangerous than someone doing 90 because they were generally paying attention.

Sounds about right ^^^^^

Motorway limits should be raised. You get no where at 70, well you do but alot slower than if you where speeding!

That makes perfect sense to me. I have mega lack of concentration when driving slow, probably due to my low attention span and the fact that I get bored very easily.

But I find when I drive fast(er) I drive better and concentrate and anticipate other drivers actions better also.

This is both in the car and on the bike! Thumbs Up

Only time I find myself within the limits is in built up areas or peak times. Also take extra care when I'm on the bike in town areas due to being an easy target to get pulled.

I'll no doubt join when I start back up working this summer *sigh*

Although, how would these things stay in the bikes? Surely people would just rip the things out?

Although I can see the benefit of finding out what happened right before an accident, that is far outweighed by the cons. I'm not a fan of it.

Don't go down the whole BMF/MAG member/non-member argument type thing again...

I think it's a legitimate question Confused
After all if you only preach to the converted how do you get anywhere?

As an example:
NEC show last year, went to BMF and MAG stands. MAG told me how they'd done a great job preventing leg protectors. However, the photos used for this on the stand looked ancient and hardly relevant to todays bikes. All BMF could tell me about was cheap entry to their Peterborough show.

Now Sadie et al did a better job on here using the argument You've got a bike, do you want to keep riding it? and gave examples of current threats to this.

So I guess what I'm saying is more emphasis on current and upcoming threats and restrictions got my attention rather than past successes (that IMO were irrelevant to me today).

Thumbs Up Karma

^^^ Don't you read any bike mags? Confused

Even the likes of Superbike and Fastbike have news on what BMF and MAG are doing......
It's not just the members that hear about this sort of stuff.

If they do that i'll just buy a used bike before that came into force. If they make you put it on all bikes i'll ride illegally as with all the other ridiculous proposals.

The BMF and MAG must sit down and do this stuff, power limits in the nineties? Would be better if they publicised this more (although if you keep you eyes open there is a magazine from the BMF or MAG available in Hein-Gericke at least, and it's free!).

Id better start on that turbo charged Katana soon though Thinking Police

Very Happy Have to laugh. Asked at the MAG stand at the NEC if I could have a copy of their magazine to look at and see what they did.
Response was "We'll give you one of those when you join!".

- I walked away, do these people on the stands have any people skills? Rolling Eyes Brick Wall

Will keep a look out in Hein Gericke. Although I'm the sort of sad person who goes shopping only when they need stuff, not just for a browse.
