Isle of Man TT - tips . . . .thinking about going

As the title says - been looking at it and I assumed it would all be booked up etc but it isn't it seems. Looks doable if I book soon.

I'll take a look at ferries a bit later but camping is still available.

Any advice . . .when to go - race days? Practices? Mixture? this will likely be a solo trip as well.

I humbly bow to experience for any tips . .

for me its always race week, nothing will compare to the excitement and buzz at race week.

Staying in one of the towns is always a must for me too as the night life is great. Though taxis are readily available and not expensive.

Get it booked, you will not regret it, totally gutted to be missing this year.

As said youve gotta be on the ball booking stuff. BnB's and hotels can be just as bad as the ferries.

Ive been for a full race week which was awesome, weather was top all week (2013 i think) was the reason i got a bike to be honest.... then ive been across just for the day as a foot passenger with the mountain bikes, which was also very enjoyable, you just run a gamble with the weather....

Im off to the Classic this year cant wait. Wanna try get over to Ireland to watch some over there too

Ferry tickets will be available in Feb when people inevitably to cough up when full payment is due, but you'll need to be quick if you want race week!

Camping is a doddle to book, but still best to get it done as soon as your ferry is sorted.

Quarterbridge Rugby Club campsite is pretty good, and a short taxi from the night life.

Personally, I prefer practice week to race week. I wouldn't even bother taking the bike for race week. The mountain is pretty much permanently shut due to accidents, and the roads are choked solid with bikes.

Practice week gives you much more opportunity to actually enjoy riding around the course, or the island in general (hint, most of the fun de restricted roads are found outside of the actual TT course). The island really starts to fill up form Wednesday onwards, when you'll find the mountain road closed more and more frequently

Whenever you go, it's epic fun, and not like any other experience. Do it!

Which ferry company should I check at that time - seems it's just the one really - they have tickets but the times are a bit poop . .

Have a look at Glen Lough campsite. It's near union Mills and is on the TT course.

We stayed in 2015 for 2 weeks.

It's huge, well equipped and there's a big marquee with live bands every night. You bring your own booze and the atmosphere is brilliant.

You can watch the races from certain spots on the site if you don't feel like traveling.

Oh yes, and what Sid said about being early if you want to watch from a particular spot. He dragged me (kicking and screaming) out at 7.30am to ge a spot at Bradden Bridge for the Senior race (which was at 12.30). We got there before 8am and bagged the last two seats. There were hundreds there already!

Why not go for both weeks?

I've been for the last two years with a team and obviously race week has much more of a buzz but practice week is brilliant and you can walk around the padock pointing at shit and talking to people. It's great and if you're not a cunt everyone is really friendly and helpful.

I'd get a B and B in Douglas if I were you.
Near the start line, tt shops and padock
Near the beach where they have a day or two of mx
Near the ferry port
Near the big tent thing where they have music and booze every night.

Unfortunately I'm not going this year but enjoy it and good luck

Definitely Race Week if you can. Ferries aren't always on time either we left 45 mins late due to the amount of bikes needing strapped down. There will be cancellations available end of Feb as been said before. Most camp sites do tents and air beds as normal so if you book something try get a site that has one for you ready. Saves packing a tent and stuff just sleeping bag required. Best place I found for camping was the football/rugby field it was only 2 mins walk from the paddock and grandstand.

Ferry re-sales will be available after February 24th. Even on the day they go on sale a year prior, you can't be picky. You need luck if you want to book around the Superbike & Senior, I could only get Sunday to Thursday. For about 6 weeks I was then checking the TT homestays page multiple times a day, as places to rent also sell out immediately.

Ferry and bike from Liverpool is £216 this year. I've no viewing experience but I've got Cronk-Y-Voddy Straight, the Bungalow & a few hundred yards after the Creg on my mind.

If you can't sort this then the Ulster GP is near Belfast and very easy to arrange.

Remember to take a trip around the circuit and marvel at all the dotted lined sprayed on most of the mountain section.
