I'd like a blacked out or blue tinted visor for my helmet. Does any one know how tinted you can legally have it Question

50% I think, whatever it is, it's hardly tinted at all as far as 'race' tinted visors go.

something like 50% visable light 90% UV light, dont quote my though.

i suppose you know if a visor is legal or not as it will either have the bs stamp, or not. It is not legal if it says 'for race use only'

There's a certain condition, it must let through 20% of ambient light or something to that effect.

I can't remember or find the correct figure, but it is just that, a figure.

To be legal it will allow at least 50% light transmission. If legal it will have BS4110 XA, YA or ZA marked on it.

I asked for a road legal tinted visor and was given one that looked completely clear. Just got a black race visor from NEC and carry my clear one with me.

So would you advise getting a blacked out or Blue tinted one Question Question

So what chance have you got off a police officer pulling you over because he believes you helmet is to tinted.

Quote:
The British Motorcyclists Federation has been actively campaigning to conclude the question of the legality of visors with tints of less than 50% light transmittance particularly in the light of increased activities by the police and Trading Standards Officers.

Source: https://www.motobykz.co.uk/Rants_and_raves/Rants_and_Raves_february.htm

Quote:
Its currently illegal to use or sell a visor that hasnt been manufactured to BS4110 or ECRE22.05 (European standard). These standards require the visor to transmit 50% or more of available light, as well as comforming to anti-scratch and shatter standards. Dark visors generally transmit between 20-25% of available light but there are fears that they are not as scratch and shatterproof as BS- approved clear visors.

Source: https://www.bmf.co.uk/dark_visors/page1.html

Quote:
Legislation requires that motorcyclists' visors comply with UNECE[ 1 ] Regulation 22.05 or British Standard BS4110:1979 (as amended). These standards currently allow visors intended for daytime use only to have a moderate tint with a minimum light transmittance of 50%. However, some motorcyclists like to wear darker visors when riding in bright conditions and most members of the BSI visor committee would like to amend the BS to include dark visors (with an 18% light transmittance). There have been no calls by other Member States for such a change to the common European standard - UNECE regulation 22.05.

Legal tinted visors only have a very light tint to them. I don't know the exact figures either but the ones I have looked at aren't really worth bothering with. If its the sun you want to keep out of your eyes then either wear a pair of sunglasses or go for a dark tinted/iridium visor. If you choose the visor option then: 1, Don't get caught (although the chances of a copper being bothered is minimal). 2, Don't use it in poor weather or ahen its getting/gone dark.

Are mirrored, or tinted visors easier to see out of, or isnt there any difference?

The other point worth noting is that these rules apply to your primary eye protection, this means that there is the rediculous situation where you aren't allowed a tinted visor but a tinted visor insert is legal. There was some sort of problem with visor inserts recently but I think it has blown over now??

A road legal tint is not very dark, certainly less dark than the one in that picture.

You need to buy a visor specifically for your make of helmet. Not just the same brand, but the same model too. Have a look at a few different visors, and you will see they are all quite different from one other.
