 |
|
Over the last couple of days I have become aware of a ticking or tapping noise, in time with the revs. After listening to it idle after a run, it seems to be 2 noises, one from the engine and one from the exhaust.
The engine noise is a tapping but I am not sure if it is just the traditional "bag O' Spanners" ER5 noise, the tappets or some an actual problem.
The exhaust sound is more of ticking but is also interspersed with a sort of cough? It sounds like it is coming from the end can (as opposed to the headers) but I suppose the sound might just be traveling down the length of the pipes.
The engine and exhaust after a 25 mile ride, so nice and warm
After the return ride
Hoping the exhaust is just a worn gasket at the header or something, but the engine noise is a little concerning.
Anyone more experienced in the noises ER5s are supposed to make have any ideas? |

I can't tell without visual indicators, because they would show where the camera's mic is in relation to the bike as you're walking around it, and whether there are any reflecting objects in the space around the bike. For example, it would sound loud in a small garage with the camera held right up next to the engine and exhaust, but that wouldn't necessarily be abnormal.
The bike sounds more or less normal in tone and correctly timed.
I suppose that that sound would indicate something wrong if it's very loud, in which case I would suspect that the valve clearances might be a bit too large. The sound on the recording is very loud. But I can't tell if it's abnormally loud unless I can see where the mic was placed while the sound was ongoing. If you were standing a few feet away in an open space and heard what's recorded in that audio segment as loud as it is in my headphones, then something would be wrong and I would suspect valve clearances. If not that, then check for an exhaust leak. ____________________ Safety in numbers |

Hmm... Minor acoustical reflection I'd reckon, there is a solid wall to the in front of the bike but by about 6 feet in the first with the other 3 sides open, the second video has a wall to the left about 4 feet and one behind by about 8-9 feet with the other 2 sides open. I appreciate it can be hard to relate the sounds from a video to what the bike sounds like in reality though.
It sounded very loud today so its getting valves checked again tomorrow (I have a horrible feeling I fucked up and got the exhaust and inlet clearances mixed up - on the CG the clearances were identical so it didn't matter).

How do you find unwanted holes?
Assuming the nuts aren't totally seized the exhaust is planned to come off this weekend anyway for a clean with the old steel wire brush and polish but would it make more sense to clean it in place to help with checking for leaks? |
