Hi all,

So to start with my bike would not start on a cold 6am morning start for work this week! It tried to turn over but had a bit of a rumble and then gave up. so that was me in the car that morning. When i got home i eventually was able to get it started by turning the key 10 or so times (I heard this resets the ECU?) and eventually it started over with a lot of throttle added in. When it did start up there was a lot of white smoke that came out.

Now it starts up every time but it does still have white smoke coming out of the exhaust for the first 10 minutes or so (not excessive amounts but still a fair bit) plus there is quite a smell of fuel! I have recently replaced the exhaust a scorpion serket exhaust (only a slip on).

Is there anything that you can think of? I mean it is very cold at the moment but my old exhaust never did this? any help would be very much appreciated!

Thank you in advance

Smoke or water vapour? Does it smell bad?

Some exhaust systems have a drain hole for water to drop out at the bottom. If your new one doesn't have it then water may be boiling off.

Could be cold weather, could be blown head gasket. If it spits water out, then it's moisture/water in the exhaust system its self.

It seems to be running fine is there any way of telling if the head gasket has blown? no loss of power etc but can't understand the fuel smell either? Could it be anything to do with putting a new exhaust on?

Coolant loss and or oil mixed with water forming mayonnaise are signs of breached head gasket.

In the cold condensation forms inside the exhaust and water vapour becomes more noticeable as it boils away. Does 'smoke' come out of your mouth too on a cold day? Laughing

Also worth mentioning that i have just had my carb clearance done and a full service but wasn't doing this for a week or so on my old exhaust and then when i have out my new one on it has started doing it. i have also had it into the garage when it wouldn't start but they couldn't find anything wrong with it, they checked fuel lines etc and reset ecu and configured it to this new exhaust, Proper sound guys at the garage.

Hope this helps in finding a solution

Presume that's valve clearance, as is injection model no carbs.
Check they've not overfilled the oil.

Looks like water vapour. You're freeing up baby clouds to join with mummy cloud in the sky. It probably goes away after 5 mins of riding. That's when the cloud making womb inside the engine shuts down. Well, only if the womb valve was done up right.

Wait for warmer weather, until then chillax.

sorry Hong Kong Phooey yes it was valve clearance, ok so is the point where i need to get a grip and stop worrying about my poor bike! lol! I just took it out for a quick run on the motorway and by the time i had come off at the next junction it had stopped blowing white smoke and not much of a smell. So do i take it that it all should be fine?

All looks and sounds normal. You'll get a smell of petrol on a cold morning as the engine will run over-rich and very in-efficiently until it warms up. The 'smoke' is mainly water vapour, partly stuff pooled in the exhaust, mainly steam (bi-product of combustion) condensing against the cold metal of the exhaust. Your bike is fuel injected, in comparison the much cruder cold start choking on my carbed Fazer chucks out white 'smoke' about four times thicker.

At first by your description i would have said the vale seals had gone and you were burning oil... that produces a blue white smoke... But its thick.

The smoke your getting is mostly steam. And its cold weather. If it was a really cold day I would have said that was normal amount of vapour coming out.
