hi guys
what would you say would be a reasonable price for a 2001-2002 honda cbr600 f sport and what sort of mileage are we looking at? for a first big bike not keen on spending too much but dont want a lemon either. i quite like the old sports red one, theres a private one going for £2k for a 2001 but has just under 50k miles, then there is a 2002 one for £2.9k from a main dealer with 20k miles on it. just thinking what sort of ballpark i'm looking at and anything i should look for besides general chain health, listening to it idle and possibly giving it a test ride

cheers

They're solid, but at 50k it would have needed some serious bits replacing. The rear shock of my 97 bike with 30k on it was a saggy messy affair, and needed attention - if the 50k one hasn't had an overhaul it will need one.

Both seem very top heavy on pricing for me. No way I'd pay near three grand for a 16 year old bike regardless of how good it is.

What arry said.

First one iis too expensive for a bike with 50k on it.
Second one is too expensive for how old it is.

I'd expect to see the private one for £1,500, and the dealer for £2,000.

It likely wouldn't be worth that much.
https://www.doble.co.uk/11682/used-motorcycles/HONDA/CBR600F

Paint chip on fairing mounting point above rear brake master cylinder, long scratch on tank, chips out of right side fairing where meets frame and lower down around engine casing, front brake lever ball looks like it's had some collateral damage.

At least MOT history looks clean.

I have a 2001, I have used it to commute and dick about on for the past 8 years. Used bike prices are taking the pee pee a bit recently, I paid £2000 8 years ago Laughing .

As for things to go wrong, in the time I've owned it relatively little (not including consumables (tyres, chain, sprockets, plugs, filters, pads, fluids)):

#I fitted a new speed sensor (£30 ish used), the speedo would take about 10 mins to kick in.
#I fitted CCTs - they rattle like mad at about 5 krpm, new CCT and gasket is about £70. An OEM auto will probably last about 20k before borking again.
#My radiator rotted out on one of the side tanks - had it welded up (£50).
#The mild steel downpipes rot. Do yourself a favour and find a bike with stainless to save yourself the hassle of the studs snapping. If you do decide to DIY, I can heartily recommend motad downpipes (£300 ish). The chinese specials made the bike run funny, deadspot at 5k.
#The indicator switch gets gummed up and needs cleaning out, I'm yet to find a grease that does the job properly so I've had to do this a few times. No grease is on the crunchy side.
#Some rusty fasteners here and there but nothing major - I washed it in 2013, then again some time in summer last year.

I think that is pretty much it other than my shock feeling a bit tired and the front suspension being undersprung for most people. Never had any of the electrical issues with reg/rec people bang on about, never failed an mot.

I'd buy another without question.

Specifically an F Sport? The pre-RR model? There's not that many of them around compared to F or later RR models.

I'd start by looking at what people are actually bidding on eBay.

thanks for the help guys, will start having a look around to see what sort of prices they are going for.

@DrDonnyBrago that list doesn't seem too bad for a bike from 2001! which is good for me as tbh I am a bit lazy when it comes to maintaining my bike other than a few quick visual checks, but will learn more of the bike I do get and start to maintain it better

The only reason I chose the F-sport and the particular years was because it had the twin lights, I am not a fan of the single light bikes.

I am also looking at CBR600rr and also R6, tbh my preference is R6 but difficult to find old models for a good price

Have you ridden an RR or an R6? A colleague recently chopped in his RR for a CBR600F because of the more comfortable seat and riding position. He reckons it's effectively as fast (i.e. quicker than anything else) on public roads up to license-losing speeds.

have not ridden an RR or R6 no, only big bikes I have ridden are the CB650 on my DAS and my friends GSXR600.

why the RR or R6? purely for aesthetic reasons and I like the look of them to be honest. also open to a ZX6R as saw a lovely 05 one ride past me today

Ah, neat. If you enjoyed the Gixxer then you should be OK on the RR or R6.

P.S. In case you were unawares, there are earlier models which use carbs, but for theFI models - there is an F sport model (only made in 2001/2002) and an F model (made from 2001-2006).

The F sport has a different seat unit, an extra clutch plate, no centre stand and a few very minor engine modifications. Performance wise you will not tell the difference, but the standard F is comfier and cheaper.

Fsport:

F

The early models of both the F and F sport had adjsutable suspension, not sure what year they changed but the later F models have nonadjustable forks.

cheers both, I think the F-sport looks sexier from a complete layman's perspective. I am a complete noob when it comes to the inner workings of a bike but I am slowly learning! so I think it will be the F-sport, RR or R6 for me. The GSXR I rode was lovely to ride to be honest, I just hate that front end

I had a f sport as my first proper bike (oh to be 17 again!).

only issue in 20k miles was me blowing the engine up because of complete lack of servicing Laughing (i couldn't be any further opposite to that now, the triple got a service after riding it home and the k6 has had 3 services in 5k miles Laughing )

anyway, I paid 3400 I think January 2006 for a 52 plate and sold it with 34k ish in 2008 for about 2400 which was pretty shagged. bike prices take the piss recently.

only 600 it didn't match or outpace was a zx6r b1h 636 (which I've since had 2 of...).

oh and it's more than fast enough to get you banned. twice.

Seems insane to pay £2k for a 2001 50k miles bike.

An extra £750 would get you this...

Seems insane to pay that for a 2005 when an equivalent 2008 recently went for less.

I apologise if olderer is betterer in ZX6Rs.
