Hi all,

I am currently undertaking a design/engineering project for my final year at university, focused on motorbike helmets. As I am not personally experienced with them myself, I was hoping some of you would be able to help by providing some information and feedback via a very short questionnaire!

Link to questionnaire: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/MCVSMHG

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Max

Which Uni, which course?

What have you read up on, have you been to a bike shop, have you asked anyone who rides a bike?

This seems total spam, but I am prepared to be wrong.

Thanks to everyone who answered the survey, to those who answered seriously I am very grateful, to those who didn't... at least you gave me a good laugh!

And yes, I know nothing about motorbikes or helmets, I was given the brief by my course. Thank you all for telling me so many times!

I didn't actually put this on the survey, but I suspect the single most useful thing anybody could develop for helmets would be proper double glazed visors (to prevent misting up without the drawbacks of a pinlock), if sold as an aftermarket thingy (like on racevisors) I suspect there would be many ponds to be made.

Then go forth into the real world and find out, if you're too skint to do a CBT course then at least go to a motorcycle shop and talk to them.

There is no substitute for talking to people face to face when it comes to understanding their requirements. I base that statement on thirty or so years as a professional analyst/programmer.

Other than that, your survey was disappointing and you're a disappointment.

Oh dear god. This survey has been still born before the ink was dry...

I've got one. They don't work very well as it turns out.

The electrically heated double glazed ones on the other hand are reportedly excellent.

You can get neither in the UK because they don't let enough light through to comply with EU regs. They are designed for snowmobiles and HJC do a retro-fit kit for their lids.

I bought the double-glazed one when I was in the US on holiday and brought it back. It's better than a standard one in terms of misting but no panacea, it still mists. The helmet was epic noisy so it's been sat in the shed for years now. Probably got mice in it.

What it really needs is a laminate glass visor with a built-in heating element. That would also remove the problem of the starburst effect of small scratches caused by winter salt. It would also give all these seasonal college fuckwits something to project their HUD design projects onto.

Well, while i dont have the money for it... A HUD system that can be put into a helmet is kinda what my project idea was...

The real issue with hud systems is focusing. Think about it. You cant just place a transparent display in a pin lock as most people even with 2020 vision cant focus on anything thats only an inch in front of there eyes.

This is where a google glasses kinda thing works...

Anyway... something fun to work on one day

I have considerably better than 20/20 vision and my girlfriend is blind as a bat without glasses, I can't read my phone screen if it is closer than 3 inches away from my eyes, and my girlfriend probably can't read anything without glasses unless it is 2-3 inches away. She can see well up to about 3/4 of an inch, much closer than me.

20/20 vision isn't perfect vision by any stretch. It is when you can see what someone with normal eyesight can see at 20ft at 20ft. It isn't really used professionally in the UK, we use meters, the equivalent is 6/6 vision. I have 6/3.8 vision so at 6 meters I can see what someone with normal/good eyesight can see at 3.8 meters.

This is all massively off topic but oh well. Something like Google glass would be brilliant, as it would need to be focused at 20m / ∞ for you to not loose focus on the road and cars. Something like this would be cool, massively expensive but so is Google glass. https://www.reconinstruments.com/products/jet/

Just watched a promo vid about skully... Damn i hate the announcer. Im Mr Serious..... Listen to me...!!!!!!!!!

Anyway Its nice to hear Kitt do the car link stuff....

But I admit my idea, does still have one usp, it would have fitted to any lid. You didnt have to spend hundreds maybe a thousand quid on a lid, that might break if you come off...

Would be a double kick in the balls that one.

So yeah, my idea was something that could safely retrofit into a lid... or maybe in a glasses setup... I dunno. Its just ideas floating in my head.

https://techcrunch.com/2016/07/26/once-promising-ar-motorcycle-helmet-startup-skully-has-crashed-and-burned/

Reasons?
----------------------------------------------

Regardless there is a lot of information that we process without sight - we all call this "feedback" - having HD rendered images on screen is "cool", but same information could be fed back in many other ways.

Sat Nav I just hook up a ear bud to my phone - Google maps tells me where to go.

could fill a lid with buzzers and vibrations - but we have that direct from primary source - our machines - not like a insulated car.

some problems are non problems in the first instance - but then having a decent HUD on the visor would be cool as you like, on that one perfect day a year, when it's not misted up, to warm, clean and not to bright a dry day.

like I say I still don't care - It'd be awesome to have a quality HUD, especially for track lines and "seeing" corners on dark unknown roads.

"Are there any features you would like to have on your helmet?"

That's a closed question - the only possible answers are "Yes" or "No".*

* or possibly "Anne Hathaway".
