I am currently looking at getting a thundercat, the one ive seen is abit overpriced (we shall knock him down! 2985 for a stone chipped to buggery 97 cat... pah), but pretty and a complete pussy magnet, see below

https://images.nxgn-ltd.com/getimg.asp?PIC_ID=986245&WIDTH=320&HEIGHT=240&BGCOLOR=

Anyhew, it has recently come to my attention from various sources that the cat is in some respects, a bit of an animal. Pretty much flagship sports bike a few years back, then got old in the tooth so its a 'sports-tourer' now.

Just wondering from anyone who owns one, is the geometry good enough for wheelies and stoppies. Is their enough power for power wheelies and in which gears (on standard gearing). How tasty is it for clutch ups, and again which gear/speeds work well.
Im just really musing, but it would seem i would rather stunt then speed in my present state of mind, so i just would like to check it wheelies and stoppies well (and controllably - aka i wont flip it by being a numpty)

Sorry for rambling, oh and comments about the purple-nova-eater would be appreciated

Bike will only wheely as controlled as you make it.. the cat will wheely, stoppy and do everything.. better if you down gear it though.

I know. However this is my first 100 bhp bike, just like to know in what gear will a quick snap of the throttle in a straight line result in arse sliding and a cartwheeling bike.

Plus i prefer clutch up for control, but theres something very fun about power wheely wheelfloats. i ride a ktm 250 quite often and altho you could clutch it up, you get the distinct feeling you would end up on you're arse very quickly, whereas power wheelies seem smoother and easier to back off of.

I guess best way to tell is to ride one, but obviously on an illegal test ride the last thing i want to be doing is trying to power wheely it on the first straight i find.

In standard gearing you will have to try a bit, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Remember 600s have a lot longer first gear than lighter and smaller, though less powerfull motorcross bikes.

It will undoubtably require a lot more effort than a decent mx KTM to get it up, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Downgearing can often make clutching it up better...

i.e. using 2nd instead of 1st etc.. longer and smoother etc..

If the cat is anything like the R6 then I guess power in 1st, lot of clutch in 2nd.. but best ask dusty as he has a cat'

Before you even trying anything you need to buy mushrooms/bobbins, a steering damper, good sized end handle bar weights and an engine guard will help to protect even more.

It's about 6000rpm to get it to wheelie from 1st gear but you need to practise controlling the release of the clutch to keep it under control

To hold a wheelie for a long time it's ideally you need to eventually reach 3rd gear working up in increments to 3rd gear.

Really you need to invest in stunt riding lessons because they can provide a bike with an attachment on the back which controls how high the wheelie gets to stop it flipping over. So this allows you to more safely practise such manouvre without crashing.

That's bollocks..... you can hold a long wheely in first, or 6th..gears only determine the SPEED you wheely at... if you get BP in 1st you can wheely for just as far as you can in 3rd... just slower...

No such thing as stunt riding lessons really... not in the UK anyway..there are wheely schools, but they are more just to get you to safely lift the wheel and that's about it.. I don't agree with anti-flip devices to be honest either.. the "wands" don't completely stop you flipping and the bars etc just stop you going backwards - can still go left/right/over the bars (yes, when wheelying if you drop the wheel too fast and lean forward you're over the bars! Laughing )

Each to their own but practice on industrial estates with a few mates is the way forward..

It just takes practice and more practice..honest.. ignore most peoples advice (and mine if you want.. I'm not bothered) and learn your own way, all you gotta remember is to take it slow, progress slowly but smoothly and controllled.. and if you're having a bad wheely day, then STOP and wait for another day.. else you won't progress and risk crashing.. different people learn to wheely in different ways, some like to power, some clutch, some this way some that way etc.. some can change gear before they can get balance point etc etc.. just practttttttticeeeeeee

3rd gear maybe slower with a wheelie but it's progression to learning to wheelie and sustaining it and then you can go more quickly once you get used to it !

3rd gear is faster, not slower... nothing wrong with whatever gears people want to use, all I'm saying is there is no "ideal" gear IMO.. just launch it in whatever gear poss, if you can't keep BP or want to go faster.. then change gear..

I thought Tcats had a slightly lower tuned R6 engine?
