Aft'noon,

Another day closer to my test, and another day of snow so I can't practise (starting to get nervous now there's only four weeks to go Shocked )

Anyhoo, In the two weeks since my last lesson, I have completely forgotten which line I am supposed to take when going around a corner Confused

If the road is turning to the left, am I supposed to be in the left side of my lane near the gutter, or is it the other way round?

Cheers!

Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but I was taught to always stay 'just left of centre' at all times, that is unless your turning at a junction or the such. Took me a while to get used to that as I was always cutting the corner (which you get marked down for.) I just drilled that into my riding style, stayed in that position throughout the test and come out fine, without being marked down.

This is just what I learned a few month back, so can someone confirm this or is there several riding styles which may be taught differently, depending on the instructor? Smile

Going round a left curve in the road I'd be positioned to the right of the lane to give a better view through the bend. If I was turning left into say a side road then you should be poistioned towards the left side of the lane.

Yeah, I was taught 'left of centre' on my DAS.

Then, back at the training centre after passing, got told to ignore that for the real world. Along with a list of about 10 other things that my instructor didn't like about 'test standard'. Laughing

Aw nuts, that means I have been doing it wrong then Rolling Eyes

I remember him telling me that when I turn left at a junction, I have to be a couple of feet from the kerb on the left, so I assumed that it would be the same for going left around a kerb.

Bugger!

Cheers peeps Thumbs Up

SNIP: I just got this email from my instructor (I though he was away on holiday, that's why I asked on here as well), looks like you were all right:

Quote:
For a left hand bend stay in the centre-that way you get a better view of the bend opening up. for a right hand bend move to the left of centre-same thing applies. you might think hang on, why dont i go to the right of the centre on a left hander, but you are putting yourself in a potentially dangerous situation then, by being too close to the centre line, not giving any room for the moron in the BMW who will, inevitably cross the dividing line whilst cornering.

Always left of centre when your learning and doing your test....always. That way you really can't go wrong or get marked down.

Of course that all goes out the window after you pass! Laughing

Its a balance between visability and enough safety margin in your own lane.

Dont ride in the gutter because you encourage cars to do dangerous force through over takes.

But dont ride out on the white line or you'll have a nasty meeting with a wide vehicle one day.

For your test just stick to the centre-right.

Remeber there is a line of oil/grit/crap down the middle of the road... riding on this can be bloody dangerous as you can lose any grip at times. Its best to ride defensivly on the right of this centre 'line'. Since you prevent cars trying to squeeze past, but arent riding agressivly enough to intimidate oncoming cars.

Once you pass your test you will begin to pickup better lines, visability + speed lines etc..

But dont worry about that yet.

I hope you pass first time, bet you are sick of the SR125 allready, I was extreemly bored of the damn thing.

I was told to ride in the centre of my lane, this was too stop any car drivers thinking there was a space to overtake if you are slightly over too the left.

My instructer told me it was called a dominate position or something.

Like commanding your lane, as soon as someone in the car see's what they think is a gap they will take it (from experiance they do) so you have to close gaps so they do not try it.

bah, its late and Im making no sence.

I'm not too bored of the SR yet. I just hate the fact that it takes about 3 days to pull away from a junction whilst cars fly past you.

Plus I really hate 'L' plates! Evil or Very Mad

I was taught the exact opposite for DAS - right of centre for "general" riding.

The examiner will expect you to dominate your lane and ride just as you would if riding without an examiner following you.

Damn straight. I really didnt like staying left of centre on the road as on left handers it makes visibility very poor. Now, as said, it's all out the window and I just try and take the quickest/maximum view ahead line.
