What it would be like to ride a 125cc for 2,000 miles?

I already know, I'm just trying to settle something with a mate.

The premise here is basically to travel 2,000 miles on a 125cc bike.



UK bikers probably know where this is going..

It would be fine. It wouldn't be very fast. An opportunity to take in the scenery, like a bicycle but a lot less effort.

(Not 2000 miles all at once, of course. You'd probably fall asleep while riding in that case, no matter what cc the bike.)

I did it in the 1970's, I did over 2000 mile's on a two week holiday on a vespa driving around Lancashire and Yorkshire from Kent, really good fun ,and plenty of good northern beer.
Use only A and B roads, nothing larger , improve the padding on the saddle, cos you don't want to get off walking like John Wayne , and keep your riding position upright to keep the weight off your arms

No I was not mod, it was my first machine, as an apprentice it was all I could afford at the time , I think my wage was £12 a week, and I could fill the tank for £1.00

As long as youre not in a hurry and keep your daily miles to a sensible level it'll be fine. I've done 200 mile days around the countryside and enjoyed it.

Avoid motorways (which I'd do anyway unless a fast transit was needed) and 70mpg dual carriageways where possible. The twistier the roads the better. I find in the twisty bits I'm generally wanting to go a bit faster than most cars but the power isn't there for overtakes so it can be frustrating. This is why you need to be content to just cruise.

Also worth considering thar most 125s will be spending a lot of time flat out (which is fine) and will possibly require an oil change in that time. Not to be neglected if constantly at full throttle.

I did 1600 miles in a mountain bike so doing it on a 125 would be fine.

If it's about the joy of riding a motorcycle then it will be boring beyond belief.

If it's just about getting from A to B it will still be boring beyond belief.

If you're on a schedule, it'll be rushed, even if you plan for it.

If you're a Trustafarian or on a "sabbatical" and abandoning your wife to pay the mortgage stinkwheel it'll be just fine. People can and do go round the world on them.

If you're doing a tour for the enjoyment of seeing new places - sure, a 125 4 stroke will be quicker than a push bike, but still very frugal to get around with and carry an ok amount of kit.

I'd prefer an option that I would enjoy riding more.

Depending on how many miles you'll be averaging per day, along with things like weather conditions and the possibility of a flat tyre and/or breakdown in the middle of nowhere, also how comfortable your bike/riding posiposition is, you may not be able to even look at it again for at least a week without groaning, never mind ride it afterwards.

But, yes. It is certainly doable.

I speak from experience btw. Although it wasn't quite 2,000 miles. I think it was around 1,400 - 1,500 over a 3-4 day period, if my memory is correct.
