It looks clean and serviced for its age, I guess 1,949 is not a bad price but no warranty because of its high miles.

My GSXR1100 has done over 60k. Used zero oil. I'd be more worried about chassis bearings and knackered carbs than engine wear.

54k mile zx7r for near £2000 is very pricy, at that mileage I'd be looking to spend around £1300 personally if from a dealer.

It must be roadworthy, as described, and fit for the purpose sold.

They don't have to give an explicit warranty, and there's no reasonable expectation that an 18 year old bike with that mileage will be problem free.

You guess right, it's a ridiculous price. I'd want to pay maybe £1200, privately.

Buying through a dealer vs. private sale

Your next conundrum is whether you want to go through a motorcycle dealership or get one through a private seller.

With a dealer, you usually get some kind of warranty on the motorbike, as well as some degree of legal protection under trading laws.

Link

Most dealers offer a basic warranty. Any that does not, does not deserve custom.

My bad.

My ZZR (G reg) has 64,000 miles. Still runs well, gets serviced every 12 months or so. there's been a couple of niggles (leaking rad, small oil weep) but nothing drastic. The engine seems as strong as ever, as having had the carbs balanced recently very smooth too.

My FJR1300 has done 50k and runs like new. I've serviced it exactly as per the Yamaha schedule which no doubt contributes to it's condition. If you are happy with the service history and the bike runs fine then why not go for it. Personally I would rather buy an owner serviced bike with documentation to back it up rather than see a load of dealer stamps in a book.

Join a page on Facebook called "THE BIKE BAY" (yes, all caps...)

Seen a couple of these up this week for around a grand.
Saw a ZX9R in good nick for £1400 but the seller said it was on eBay and then wouldn't provide a link to the ad. Which was a shame, I'd have probably bought it.

The highest miles on any of mine is 42k but had it since 12k and serviced regularly.

It is from a dealer, kawasaki dealer.
Because I am looking to downsize collection of bikes to a couple my ZX6R which was a gift and 1 more. Im looking to P/X so would cost me virtually nothing think about £60 or something cash.
I asked about the service history and was told it has been serviced as you expect it to have been, which is a cop out answer. I expect regular service but also expect some don't look after their bikes.

The reason I wanted to go dealership is that every time despite paying for pro check over and delivery ( long range ) it always hits my door with issues and repairs. Gsx6r looked over by a mechanic before purchase and delivery- 2 new tyres, new rear brake, rear sprocket and chain, indicator issue on rear, head bearing, battery when it got to my door.

cbr F3- tyres, battery, fork seal, carb balance, service at my door.

zx6r - plugs, idle cable, service, carb balance, sprocket, rear shock (still on to do list), kickstand sensor ... and now another idle since local garage broke it off / snapped it

I am just tired of having to make repairs to bikes that were deemed ok by mechanics. Ones I have personally looked at minor repairs but I want something with no worries with warranty of some description. Private sellers are also not as reliable as they appear, will do anything to sell. Was on track to buy a RSV1000 but "its all good, im honest mate" standing in a car park acting like a thief watching around, key comes out of ignition while bike is on etc.

Why not? Second NTV I bought had 26,000 on the clock, just missing a 1 in front of it, 126,000 miles. It was used to commute daily from March Cambs, to London. It worked perfectly. Guy had kept it serviced, started first time every time, worked faultlessly. Never had a problem with it in the two years I owned it, the friend I loaned it to never had a problem with and he sold it illegally to somebody else!

My bike was bought new and now has 68k on it. Except for the odd bearing and seal it is fine.
Need to look at the bike. I have seen low mileage bikes that are utter shite.

Whilst there is nothing that would be expected to fail in an expensive, terminal way at the sort of mileage, it is high miles for a bike. This means it is more likely that previous owners haven't given it the sort of care you would expect from a 10k miler.

I would expect to find lots of fairly small, fairly cheap things to fix - but collectively you'd end up spending a fair bit. Also bits that may have been done cheaply and need doing again soon, like pattern fork seals.

I wouldn't be surprised if it needed:
- Normal consumables - full service, tyres, chain and sprockets.
- Headstock bearings
- Fork seals
- Swingarm bearings/bushes (maybe replace, maybe just grease)
- Battery
- Brake discs
- Shock(s)

The engine is the only part that is likely to be perfectly sound.

If you do buy it and have to do lots of work, it will still be worthless afterwards. If I see an ebay advert for a high miles bike with a lot of work done recently, I expect its a pup with even more problems hiding.

If you own a bike long enough EVERYTHING on it aside from the frame and the wheels become a consumable item.

Mileage wouldn't bother me that much, but personally I'd rather buy a newer bike with stellar mileage - a bike that's averaged 3k a year has _probably_ had a fairly hard life. (Short, hard runs) - a newer bike with stonking mileage has probably been sat on motorways for most of that mileage and, as it was a workhorse, is more likely to have had regular servicing.

YMMV.
