Ariel atom VS Corvette Z06 600HP at Nurburgring - kinda cool
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abAogAUyoTE

Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R at Nurburgring - Kinda AWESOME! Smile
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGsTcmLG7dU

I suspect the Atom can put in a better lap-time given a clear track, but which one was more exhilarating to watch?

I'll always have a thing for dirty great a 70's muscle car. Almost on a par with having a thing for a dirty great "muscle bike". But I'd rather commute on a mundane bike than in a mundane car. I'd rather chase laptimes on a sportsbike than in a sportscar. I'd rather "Do Europe" on a touring bike than in *any* car.

Bikes are far more fun to ride, cars stop you getting wet.

I have that Atom video in my favourites. The guy is so smooth, makes it look effortless as he flies past everything.

That ZX10 video was utterly terrifying.

In most situations I'd agree with you - but there's something quite fantastic about throwing yourself around a track in a 'super-car' i the knowledge that if you bin it you've a tiny bit more chance of surviving.

But then to some that's a negative lol 😉

That's only because you drive boring cars. In other words, can not afford any fun cars. Wink

A few reasons for me.

1) to get the kind of performance a supercar delivers costs far less for a bike.

2) riding a bike is far more involved. Not just because you can get to silly speeds much quicker than most of us in the cars we can actually afford, but because of the much higher level of input required to hustle a bike along at an 'interesting' pace (or even regular traffic speeds for that matter), even with a car of equivalent performance.

3) you feel far more connected with your surroundings on a bike (I'll forget the getting 'too connected with the surroundings' bits for now Smile ). Whilst sometimes it's nice to lounge around in a warm, comfy living room, now and again most of us want a bit more than that, something different, something more engaging.

4) defeating the traffic jams.

5) (for some, and closely linked to 3), the higher level of risk on a bike is actually an attraction, which I believe stems from the same feeling climbers get, high on a difficult rock face, where the smallest mistake can mean death. Going to the edge without actually falling over it is life-affirming, makes us feel like we are really alive.

And 6) I dunno, I just like them Very Happy

I'm big into my cars, not particularly fast ones mind haha, just oldish ones. Id never even considered getting a bike til i went to the TT for the first time, just remember seeing everyone riding off the ferry and thinking that looks ace!

I still love cars and i always will, i think its a completely different sensation going on a bike to a car (obviously...) and i dont think they can be compared to much. That said i love the mechanics of it all and messing with them, so maybe thats why i love both? it also helps that the bikes fit easily in the garage and another car wouldnt haha

I think my mighty 1.2 Fiesta LX is more fun than an SV, but each to their own.

10K bike vs 10K car.

10 year old, mid-range, £1500 sports-ish bike, vs 10 year old £1500 Sports-ish car?

You decide what you would rather have on a track.

Indeed, each to their own. I had a Fiesta 1.25 Zetec for 4 years, the most fun I had in it was crashing.

The SV easily provided more smiles while not crashing.

I don't like cars because I feel like a caged animal and get angry and agitated. When commuting into work and stationary in jams for an hour I used to smash my head against the door pillar repeatedly so eventually the pain would dull out the frustration....... could explain a lot Very Happy

To a point. There are cars out there that are bonkers enough to give me some kicks... and for not a lot of money.
I buy a car for the 'ring, simple as that. That place is lethal enough at the best of times, people drive Porches around it, they blow on a boringly regular basis. Not much fun hitting the oil and anti-freeze they spray around with abandon! Did a few tours on the bike but it soon became evident that a (half decent) car was the only way to go. It gets two of you down there, with luggage and relatively rested (and dry).
As for the UK, well any old banger will do, why bother with something flash, it will only get keyed or dinted in the Supermarket scrum. The 350z gets pampered, I actually drive a 1998 Fiat Punto, cost £250 and keeps flying through its MOT's!
But Sundays are for the 'blade. Ah, the fun of winding it up over the north Yorkshire moors, then waiting a few days to see what drops through the letter-box.....

As a car and bike owner, I think the difference for me can be summed up as follows:
    1. I only ever drive the car as a means to an end, and would never dream of going for a drive simply for 'fun'
    2. I ride the bike whenever it's possible, and 90% of my mileage is purely recreational
I appreciate that if I had a nicer car than a 10-year-old Nissan Note, I might feel differently about it; however the simple fact is that I have zero interest in getting anything better

A nice variety of opinions and I totally agree with the view that many don't want to get a so called nicer or better car than a 10year old Nissan Note, because they arnt interested enough to want to spend their cash on something else thats better.

For me I agree with roboff. I like bikes and cars and don't want to chose one over the other or give one up.

I like my silly little impractical bikes and I like my 23year old Rover 220. If someone said give up the car and I'll give you a 2015 Fireblade instead, I couldn't and wouldn't.

The big bike thing is currently missing in my life and I'm aiming to get another bike of 900-1200cc one day, but it's far from essential or needed. My biggun can wait until I've got all my other vehicles how I want them and have spare cash to spend one day. If I wait another 10years for a big naked/muscle bike/ sportsbike, it's fine by me. I hate riding and driving anything these days on busy roads, and I hate the people on the road, the arrogance, clueless types, distracted types, and anyone who doesnt take pride in their vehicles and how they drive them.

All my vehicles are for fun or enjoyment, and I'd sooner pay more tax and have faster better more reliable public transport for A-B and commuting than own a car or bike that is a daily beater that I don't give a stuff about.

That is what makes the blood pump, whilst I enjoyed watching it, I just didn't get the same feeling/emotional connection watching the Atom vid. It is the controlled danger that makes it exciting.

This!

I too am just not interested in anything other than a functional/practical car. Cars have their uses but they don't excite me - I might as well play Gran Turismo! Very Happy

There is a huge difference between not wanting a better car/motorcycle and never experiencing a better car/motorcycle. Wink

In most of the cases people have no clue there are better, more fun cars/motorcycles, than what they have and know. You don't have to spend millions to have a ZX10R or a Honda s2000, for instance.

To give you an example, when my brother was 18, he got my father's old pugg 405, ever since then my brother would claim Peugeot makes the best cars and as the time went he got yet another 405 and now he drives a 307. I'm not saying that Peugeot makes bad cars, but to put it in a prospective, there are quite a lot of car manufacturers, producing quite a variety of models for the European market. Not even wanting to try something different and sticking with what you've always known and therefor liked, seems a bit nearsighted and quite frankly sad.

Talking about cars, I tried a few of them. Before I had even slightes idea of what other manufacturers could do, my dream car was a VW generic hatchback. After I had a chance to drive some BMW and Mercedes-Benz cars, even if 10-20 years old, it did open my eyes and now I can not believe what VW concern cars owners pay for, when even a brand new Superb is just an abomination of a car. Buying a exclusive, top of the range car to have a cheap interior, engine that vibrates the whole car all the time etc.

Talking about motorcycles, it's the same story, try it before you hate/give up on it

*I'm talking about used vehicles market, of course.

I'd love a big old muscle car, like before they figured out how to change direction. Purely just to give it a boot full going into a roundabout, spin up the back wheels and wrestle the barge through the corner all without breaking the speed limit.
It'd cost me nearly as much in tyres as it did in fuel.

Which, as far as I can see, is more about the wads of dosh the owners have to splash around than any knowledge on the part of your average female of what they're designed for, or capable of.

Me, jealous? Of course I am Laughing

I've driven and ridden some silly fast/capable/powerful bike and cars.

I did Faro via Germany because of a new ZZR1100. I'm not much happier than being very silly on a tuned KX500 with Talon rims and some sticky rubber. I've had a 7.5L blown V8 (454 Hemi, Roots blower) in a front heavy pickup, I've had a '71 mustang with north of 500BHP. I abused the shit out of my Brothers Dodge Ram. I've driven (not owned) M3's, and M5, Z06, A number of jags, and the crowning glory was an XJ220.

I'm a petrolhead alright, but you give me the choice, and I'll pick a bog standard Hornet over a Z06 or M3. Every single time.

We're all different, I just happen to like bikes a lot more than cars... unless you want to buy me an XJ220... then I'd choose the car Wink

Never really understood the sneery cock-waving with bikes. If the 0-60 is over 4 seconds it's a POS?

That sv650 is still gonna eat 99% of stuff on the roads.

I've alway found fast cars a bit boring, it's so rare you can push them hard enough for it to feel exciting, whereas even rush hour commuting on a bike can be exciting.
I get a lot more satisfaction from my 77bhp 1967 Landrover than I'd ever get from a supercar, it's bloody hard work to drive, even a simple gear change requires forethought and a fair bit of skill.

Thing is, I guess if you can afford an expensive supercar, you can probably afford the track time to properly put them through their paces on a regular basis. But I'd still prefer a good bike.
