So, my boss said to me today, 'Wanna buy a motorbike? It's in the warehouse.'
I went and had a look and he offered it to me for £50.

The guy who owned it (the boss's best mate) used to work for us before moving away and now we're moving building at the end of the week, he just wanted it gone, or it'll be demolished with the rest of the building.
V5 is on its way from the owner.
No MOT, but from what I'm told, it shouldn't take much to get it passed.
And I get to tinker with an engine without ballsing my main bike up.

It is an ex-riding school bike, but it looks okay cosmetically. The riding school is on the same site as us. I know most of the instructors from smoking breaks in the same area. They do look after their bikes.

Anyway. It's £50. And I reckon I'll end up flipping it on eBay soon enough anyway.

Everyone is so lucky with these free or cheap bikes, a few years ago a guy gave my dad his bike it was a 07 plate triumph bonaville with 2500 miles on it not bad for a free bike.

£50 is a bargain I would get it on the road and if you don't use it just sell it as your going to make some good money off it

I had one of these for my first bike, if it's anything like mine the front brake will be next to useless. Otherwise they're a nice little run around.

It looked like this eventually

I was looking to hand over 800 odd quid for one of those for the wife, our bid was beaten in the last few seconds
but I'd already been and seen and ridden it. It wasn't as clean as that one you lucky sod.

Thanks for the compliments, guys.
I got to see it properly today and, well, that picture does do it justice. There's tears in the seat, rust on just about every chrome bit and the indicators and wing mirrors are mismatched.
I pushed it down to the MOT centre at lunch time (which is luckily only about 200 yards away, as the crow flies.) He's going to put a new battery in it, then give it an MOT.
If (big 'if') it passes then happy days. But at any rate, I'll have an idea on what I need to start to tinker with.
I'll post some more pictures when I get a chance.

Edit: I love Holdawayt's version. I may use it as inspiration if I get that far (see: blatant plagiarism)

Well, I just hit a pretty major hurdle - insurance.
My current insurance is £98 or something (TP - F&F) through Hastings. I can't change to a multi-bike policy with them because I don't have a garage (seriously?)
Other multi-bike policies are at least £250. On its own, it's over £130. It's bloomin' ridiculous. So, it looks like I might end up selling it after all.

The bike is costing you £50, just insure it TP only.
If it gets stolen, you've lost less than the insurance company is stealing from you.

Don't get it stolen.

That's £98 for the ER5, not the GN125.

I think there was about £3 in it on the ER5.
Anyway, I went for the absolute brass tacs with the Meerkats. Bennetts came up as £65 before they tried to Ryanair me into all sorts of extras. So I went with that. I'm insured. Hurray.

Meet Frank.

It's the first time which I've had chance to properly inspect the bike. The news from the garage is that in order to pass its MOT, he will need a new chain and sprocket set, battery, rear tyre and brake lever.

He's in pretty rough shape, but not completely hopeless, even with my skill.
I think I'll have a go at seeing what I can do myself and if I lose interest, or can't see it as being viable (or too difficult) then I will sell it on and almost certainly recoup what I've paid.

yeah, sounds good, I don't think as far as I can remember that I've ever got TPO only for less than sixty something.

Front brakes are a bit shit, but consider replacing the friction material, cleaninging and regreasing the caliper sliders and flushing the brake fluid before denouncing as completely rubbish, they stop ok.

When you do the oil change note the three bolts holding a small plate to which the sump plug screws into. Remove the small plate and you will find a secondary steel mesh filter. Remove and clean.
