A while back my petrol tank flooded into my engine when I left it on prime overnight.
Now I have about 5 litres of petrol mixed with 10w40.
My local garage wouldn't take it with petrol in no matter the cost.

Is there a safe method of burning the petrol off quickly?
I tried burning some in Heinz can, but that was taking far too long.

Does your nearest council tip have one of those waste oil bins that you pour it in to yourself? I've poured all sorts of weird shite in them without question.

Buy a large amount of Sodium Chlorate. Some nice men dressed in black will come round and take it away for you along with your can of pyotechnical liquid. Sorted Thumbs Up

Tip of the Trilby for the Very Walter White solution, but that requires time, effort and money, all 3 I wish to avoid if possible.

How much petrol are we talking about? Just leaving it in the direct sun, open lid, should evaporate the petrol. Thinking

I doubt your competence to burn it safely. There should not be a secondary source of fuel vapour, which could be a big risk if your doing it 100ml at a time in a bean can. Use a bigger container, with some air holes, all at once.

Keep it for cleaning chain.

You are correct to doubt my competence solo.
Where possible I try to stop things setting on fire rather than burn them.

I can follow strict instructions or be shown something and mimic it, but left to my own devices I'm occasionally full on BodyTard.

To that note, I always wondered about covering a chain in petrol to clean it, how long should one expect for petrol fumes to no longer be a danger?

I left the 4L bottle of it with the cap off in the sun for an hour or so today and it maybe dropped 1mm in the bottle neck.
(did some gardening, was too fearful to leave it alone, dunno what the combustion temperature is for it) Laughing

If you leave it outside, then it's perfectly safe. 1mm in 1 hour seems quick enough. Leave it there all day long. All the fumes are instantly blown away by wind. Thumbs Up

Although petrol is very volatile, the sun won't set it on fire. Just remember riding a motorcycle in summer. 35°C in the direct sun and very hot engine right under the tank. Nothing going boom. Wink

The bigger the surface area the higher the evaporation rate will be.

So don't put it in a bottle or can. Put it in a washing up bowl Thumbs Up

That is true, but there's no need to waste a perfectly alright washing up bowl. Wink

Petrol doesn't evaporate out of engine oil quickly at all...
Once had a carb float stick filling the bore and when trying to start the bike it pushed some petrol past the rings into the engine oil.

Carried on riding it for a few days hoping the petrol would be driven out of the oil by the heat and into the air box but alas the fuel still stank of petrol (O_o).

Drum, fire and hair drier (makes a big turk burner). Will do about 5 litres an hour (depending on drum size etc). Burn's very cleanly so no smoke/very little smell once it's going. Can melt copper with a baked bean size turn though so do be careful.

Put it in an old diesel, yep, good shout. Any older indirect injection diesel (<2001) with a decent (not Lucas) pump will be fine (run them on waste (used) vegetable oil, filtered, dried and when temps drop thin it down with 7-10% petrol ), will smoke a bit but won't smell like a chip shop Thumbs Up (would recommend filtering first though...)

Op has not told us what ratio this mix is. 90% petrol, 90 oil, 50/50? How much is there, 4L?

It was the specified 3.5L or whatever of oil in there, and between half and a full tank of petrol dropped into the engine, I dread to think where it seeped, but she's still running a year on.

I think you hit on the nail on the head with use it on my chain, it gets neglected as it is.

Cheers for the replies.
As always BCF, it's been interesting and informative.

Not exactly the same thing, but I use stale Petroil mix for weed killing and burning weeds etc.

You could use it if it was clean oil for cleaning parts in, but I'd not be using filthy old waste engine oil full of carbon and nasty stuff to wash my parts in.

Id use it as a cheap wood preserver maybe for un treated timber planks etc, or just keep it in a can for making a bigger/more impressive than your neighbours bonfire on November 5th?

I'll tell my friend that hiding it under a box of cornflakes in the wheely bin makes him a bad person
