Wasn't sure where to post, here, or Geek section.

Chaly, for some reason I do not know, has never had very stable electrics.
The lights are dim, the headlight almost goes out when I indicate or brake due to the added power draw.

It's always been like it on the Chaly, I've had 3 different engines, 2 looms, and tried a number of regulators.
I've got a feeling it's just not a very conductive frame, giving a shockingly bad earth.

But, I do run it without a battery.

Today, I've fitted a small battery into the wiring system, and it's stabilized the power to a point everything works. So if anything, it's just adding like a buffer.

It also used to blow bulbs a lot, so I'm hoping with a battery in line, it'll stop that happening too.

Now, this is where it gets tricky.
I dont have an ign switch.
I simply have a kill switch on the bars.

I don't want an ignition switch, or key, I'm happy with just running a tidy kill switch.

So of course, once I turn the engine off. All my lights stay on (lights are on permanently)

I had an idea in my mind, which in theory, works, but for some reason, it does not.

Here is a paint diagram, to explain my thought:

https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/s960x960/17212072_443329586018072_233378121614737690_o.jpg?oh=a6810efde0a7de311670bfbd6f488187&oe=592655AC

So my trail of thought.
When the engine is off, the battery is doing nothing, as the relay is open.

Once then engine is started, the reg/rec will feed 12v to the relay, and switch it on.
Which then introduces the 12v battery to the system, stabilizing the system.
As it's connected to the reg/rec via the relay, it'll also charge the battery while the engine is running.

But, when I cut the engine, the lights all stay on.
If I disconnect the battery, the relay clicks off, and then when I re-connect the battery, the lights stay off, as it's an open circuit again.

Once I start the bike, it does the same again.

I cant understand where the power is back-feeding though, as the 12v battery is only connected to the switched part of the relay.

Any help, much appreciated.

As the relay is closed when you switch the engine off the battery is still connected to the reg/rect and the loop that you have to the coil of the relay will continue to hold the relay closed until the battery goes flat or is disconnected. Perhaps putting a diode in the line to the battery - this will allow the battery to charge but will not allow flow back to the relay.

I understand now. Thumbs Up

So, what, if anything, can be done?

Do you have a small resistor, commonly found attached to the inlet manifold, with a pink wire fitted?

This bit:

What shape and style is your reg rec?

Also if your reg rec is dodgy it can leak voltage. Does it drain the battery if left?

I'm running a YX140 engine Garth, with a 12v system.
Reg/Rec, I've tried 3 different ones now. Currently got an OORacing one.
Stator is a single coil one. I'm thinking about trying a bigger 5-coil one from some of the late YX160s.

No resistor.
