ay up people! Thumbs Up Mr. Green

had a SERIOUSLY close call today coming home from work!! i was riding along a 40mph road near meadowhall in sheffield at about 4:30, with my main beam on and doing no more than 35mph because of all the gravel on the road. i then saw a maroon peugot 406 waiting in a side road on the right hand side. about 10 meters in front. thinking nothing off it I carried on. but then all of a sudden the car decided to pull out no more than 5 meters in front of me!! My instant reaction was to slam the anchors on! somehow skiddin on gravel at speed i managed to swerve just enough to avoid the front of his car. i honestly missed by about 20cm!!

my mate recently had exactly the same happen to him, only he came off alot worse and wrote off his brand new rs125. the woman who caused it could now be facing prosecution as there was witnessess. whats car drivers fuckin problem?!?!?

(soz bout the essay Laughing )

Thumbs Up Mr. Green

the people that do that should be forced to sit in a simulator that gives them massive electric shocks when they try and drive the computer car out of a side road/onto a roundabout/junction

when they can patently see that there is a bike/car/lorry e.t.c 5 metres away from them

something like in a clockwork orange would be good

This isn't an excuse, but a possible explanation:

You were probably obscured from the driver's view by the A-pillar when he/she glanced to the right - modern cars tend towards having thick, swept-back A-pillars - good in a crash, but they can cause a big blind-spot in the front field of vision.

There IS something you can do to improve your chances of being seen in this sort of scenario: move laterally within your lane - side-to-side.

Other than that, cover your brakes and have an escape route planned Wink

Escape route:

I will try and find a linkable reference, but I seem to remember once reading a report/article which claimed that most cars which "pull out in front of you" WILL spot you and try to stop - often halfway out of the junction.

It would therefore seem to be best to aim to go around the front of the car rather than the back...

However, if you get unlucky and go over the bonnet of the car, you may end up in oncoming traffic....

The majority of car only drivers dont think about any other thing travelling on the road.

And most of them think they are invincable.

compared to a biker they are invinsible Exclamation It never matters who's fault it is, it's always way the biker who comes out of it worst.

Ey up greenmeanie, good to hear you got out of that one unscathed. With the amount of city miles I do, I'm surprised by how good drivers can be!!! Wink

P.S you want this, I know you do...

Abit of both or just complete CU#TS! if u ask me (most of them anyway) Evil or Very Mad

i read somewhere that if u think that a car is gonna pull out u should weave from left 2 right something to do with a looming effect of thing small fast and in a straight line

Well they would if THEY were forced to ride a motorcycle as part of
the car driving test.

I had a REAL close shave Wednesday, riding down a road, one car
in front who turned left. As I got near to where he turned off he
started to reverse and missed me by a few inches. I managed to see
his reversing light, if not I would of been badly hurt. BTW this was
at night. I was lucky to see his stupid move and get out of his way.

You have to ride expecting anyone at the side roads to drive out at you all the time... wheels moveing slightly (which means the handbrake/brake is off) are a sure sign, even worse is no eye contact, give a scarey biker stare to anyone who looks like they might be about to try and pull out, if they haven't made eye contact assume they haven't seen you! allways be looking for where you can go in the event of them driveing at you.

Where your positioned makes a difference too, if the junction is at the left say, ride further to the right, they have a better chance than if your rideing in the gutter, you also are probably closer to an escape route..

once or twice i'd have been flattened if i'd not been doing these things, simple but makes a big difference... (see sig for pages and pages of more info) exactly how Fruit'n'nut said, the dopey twat on her phone at the time drove halfway into the junction, stopped so simply went arround as i was further out..

my girlfriends cousin had somebody pull out on him and wrote his 1day old (for him) nsr125 off, smashed the whole front end, lucky he was in the propper gear he was unhurt.

Ive found the ultimate deterrent for getting car drivers to pay more attention/move away from you (admittedly on a pushbike though, theory still applies!).

Basically look like your about to crash, and show it visually. I was standing on my pedals going down a hill but with my weight over the back the bike started shaking a little, then started to reallyy shake Laughing The idiot behind who wouldnt pass because I was doing about 20mph soon dropped back. Mr. Green I didnt crash but did whack my knee on my bars, I should of sat down sooner but enjoyed the feeling of no-control lol. Twisted Evil
