how did you pursuade your parents into letting you ride? (those of you it applys to)

i'd like to get a bike but my parents wont let me despite the fact i live away at uni and am 21.

any sugestions of how to pursuade them?

erm, your 21.. go take your test and get a bike then persuade them to agree with you having a bike, i.e cheaper insurance cheaper to run , usual blag

tried that on my dad but before spending the money

didnt wash he reccons it would be more dangerous than my mountain bike cos its heavyer, quite powerful and he claims i have too many mishaps on my mountain bike due to not riding in my limits and the bikes mechanical limits, also if i cant balance a bike under breaking then i wont manage a motorbike

he used to have a bike for those reasons, decided to get a car after quite a few offs

I just kept on at them.....I was living at home at the time (17) and just kept pestering my maw as I was bored until about 6 months later, she caved in and said "go get a bloody bike then". I was pretty shocked at saying that as I wasn't even hinting at bikes at the time.

Needless to say, I could have gone out and bought a bike against their wishes but I wanted their approval.

Now they're reasonably okay with it.

Maw - wants to go on the back for the easter egg run, but only if I get her some stick on bunny ears (first time on a bike, she's 57 or thereabouts). Was dead against it but now has the "go do what makes you happy" feeling I think.

Dad "I could do my DAS but I'm not sure if I'd want to"....likes the idea of bikes now but is overly cautious. Retired safety engineer so what do you expect.

Brother "I'll give you a grand to give biking up"....just said that to me...and I think he was serious...

Brother - After playing grand theft auto "so, when do I get a shot of your bike then?"

Sister - Couldn't give a shit.

My advice is just to keep at them, and if they won't give in, jsut say "I'm going to get a bike, but I'm being mature about this and just want your approval or at least to let you know". I wouldn't keep them in the dark about it.

My parents were fine with it and my dad loaned me some money to get my first bike (a cg 125 ). My mums fine with it but got a bit worried when I went to do cadwell, I think she was waiting for me to text her at some point during the day saying I had crashed, when I did text her saying I hadn't crashed and was just heading home I got a reply asking if it was so bad I didn't want to tell her yet.

She seems happy I've spent a lot of money on leathers again though, although she is a bit concerned that I've bought some track fairings incase I crash.

ah, i said, you know that one day i'll go and do it anyway dont you, but by then i'll proberbly be a bit more mature


at the moment i cant really afford it tho,

i will proberbly need to get some form of transport next year cos i'll be on work placement but it might make more sense to have a car and get a bike later cos i can see myself being more of a fair weather biker

5 mishaps in 3 years,

mugged for my bike,

landed sideways on my backside doing a jump,

went through the back window of a car,

slipped on floor tiles in the wet in the city centre with almost bald tyres on,

same somewhere else with new tyres a year later

thats about it.

i know many people who come off a lot more than me,

if i go through bikes in the same way i've gone through mountain bikes then i can see his point, i wont get insurance, i had two knicked just under a year appart, one from the garrage and one while riding nearly a year later

I didn't give mine a choice, I was 25 ish, working, ignored all bribe attempts, bought one and didn't crash for 3 years. So now when I do there not too upset as they are getting over the whole 'danger' thing.

I did it by explaining to them I was going to get one anyway so they might aswell help out and ensure my safety by spending on a better bike/safety gear/CBT etc. Seemed to work although I paid the majority.

can i say to all of you that never ride bicycles properly that you have way more accidents because its so much easier to, my dad actually pestered me to get my scooter, never so much as put a scratch on it as you are so much more careful, my excuse is that i probably save the insurance money on next years insurance if i hadn't have got it

I figured that since I already had a mortgage, I could get a bike regardless of what anyone thought about it. My dad wanted a go, my mum wanted a go on the back, as did my brother and two sisters and all their various and sundry sprogs.
