An old 87 CB900F...i've got an old 96 blade which i find a bit sore on the wrists due to injurys from years ago. Both are more or the same condition but obviously miles apart at the time handling ect wise. I was after another bandit 12 as i had one a few years ago still like the old blade too and thought about the flat bar kit.

Would this be a daft move going to an old classic from race reps...need to adjust my riding Very Happy

Presumably a grey import one of these rather than the later CB900F Hornet?

Can't see that it's daft, just a change of pace. The CB is over a quarter of a tonne wet, I'd expect braking to need planning a fair bit in advance.

Lovely looking bikes, and you get to raise an eyebrow at owners with brand new CB1000EXs and give it "Oh, a classic, you say?"

No a uk one seemingly

Yep a definate change of pace/riding required, it's easily 30 years since I've ridden an old four that age, had alsorts since god knows how I'd get on with it.

Something in me says go on go on go on and something says don't be a prick lol.

Looks like they were only made up to 1983, so it took at least 4 years to make it here and get registered.

If it's in decent nick, why not? It's going to hold its value or appreciate, it'll still win any traffic light GP, and unless you absolutely, positively have to overtake every mummy-bus on the road, it'll be quick enough for most purposes.

Why not sell the blade and buy what you want?

God no. Nice bikes but engine made from Gorgonzola. There's a reason the 1100 was vastly re engineered. Cam chains, oil pump drive gears, crank bearings all capable of enormous failure.

Yeah, I've heard about a few of these problems before. It's a shame, as if you like your old air cooled Jap classics, they're an attractive proposition. I would imagine there are sources where you can check all these things out and perhaps learn to negate some of them?

I probably wouldn't look to relying on one as an only bike. Really, the bikes of this era make more sense as a second bike for sunny Sundays, but having said that, I'll bet there are folks still relying on them as everyday hacks. I'd guess they're fairly handy with the spanners though.

I would rely on a well looked after Z650 however, and have done in the not-too-distant past. But again, I'd prefer not to own one as my only ride - I would miss modern performance and handling too much!

+1,
I bought 1 new in 1980 because I couldn't afford the bit extra for a CBX1000 and the engine lasted 4 months/4400 miles before it grenaded itself, requiring a 300 mile return trip via train - much to the annoyance of British Rail when they were mopping the oil up. Once repaired I couldn't wait to get rid of it before it happened again as they became infamously known as the Honda chainsaw.

Wasn't their other favourite trick dropping out of gear under load and stretching/snapping rods when they over revved?

Having said all this, cam chain issues weren't unique to this bike, or Honda generally (there used to be a firm who did a roaring trade in mobile chain replacements using split links) and I knew a few couriers who clocked up stellar mileages on 900Fs.

However, as someone very used to 80s UJMs, going from a 'Blade to one of these would be a massive culture shock, I reckon even a 1200 Bandit would make the 900 feel like a dinosaur.

Yes it would...ie a culture shock, would certainly slow me down unless i pushed it to far then i'd be in trouble. Had a Bandit 12 a few years ago, for basic bike it was one of the best. I do like the old blade though but might put a flat bar conversion if keeping it.
