Why do so many organised rides, use the motorway?

I was invited on one recently and it was mostly motorway so didnt bother.

The biggest ride i do each year is the Ride to the Wall, again this is all motorway.
Don't get me wrong its for a great cause but why not use A roads at least?

If i wanted square tyres id buy em that way lol

Does seem a bit silly, excludes L platers too.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

There seemed a few L platers on the Bike4LIfe ride last Sunday, but, anyhow, I can fully understand why the M54 was used for that, 7000 bikes down the A roads would cause mayhem, as it was the M54 must have been closed to all other traffic, for at least an hour, probably more like 1 1/2 hours.

The M54, you have guaranteed 2 lanes to fill with bikes, same goes for a fair chunk of the A5 leading to it.

I guess for smaller ride outs, then A roads may be fine, I suspect the motorway makes it easier to manage the traffic.

I got the impression this was mainly populated by Harley and cruiser fags types? They seem to be overly represented in any pictures I've seen. Maybe motorways is because they like straight roads and can't do corners.

There is a fair amount of sportsbikes that go, however the route suits cruisers more. Those riding mobile armchairs will love going a steady 50 all the way.

I just outright avoid those (a road and m road) rides unless there's a valid reason for it (i.e far away) going through country lanes is the way forward.

I can get to southend in 40 minutes or less depending on traffic etc. but made that ride into 3+ hours, enjoyed it way more.

...in order to exclude L-plates?
...in order to discourage the kind of riders that drag knees/pegs/elbows given the faintest opportunity?
...because the target demographic only rides on the 3 sunny sundays a year and can't go round corners?
...because route planners lazy?
...becasue police/council said no to every other route because trying to assassinate the ride without directly saying no.

Last year was woeful, set off at 7am got home at 7pm in torrential rain.....i spent about 9 hours of that on my bike.
The so called waterproof gear i had on was useless, i couldn't have got more wet if i went for a swim in my clothes!

I think the organisers need a sport bike route and keep the motorway one for cruiser.
The Cat and Fiddle is about halfway for me, so using that as a meeting point instead of Sandbach Services would be a good start Very Happy

the easy way to deal with this.
check the route,
check the date.
then make sure you are nowhere near the route on the day in question.
easy.
