How old are people's lids?

How long would you keep YOUR lid before replacing?

Whilst perusing the dealer today I noticed just how light helmets are now and got me thinking about whether mine is knackered due to old Father Time... is that a thing?

My Arai helmet is 15 years now, never touched the floor and kept indoors and shelved so relatively airy. Not seen huge mileage maybe 60k over its lifetime (had 2 helmets). Can't remember but think it was £300-400 when I got it so wasn't a cheap one.

If that's past it's date - then what would be its date or is it all marketing hype?

Found an old thread (5 years 272 days to be precise!) which discussed buying an old second hand but my question is about your own helmet. The forum even told me to post a new thread (see attached!)

My Arai Condor was bought in 2003 i think. Still works, lining a bit grubby but not in a rush to change it. Just stuck a new visor and pinlock on it.

Every 3-4 years or crash with a head impact generally. That said I do a lot more miles than I used to....depends massively on your use IMO.

My Shark is about 11 years old now. I generally take the lining out every year and put it in the washing machine.

Else it gives me a rash.

Problem's how long has your lid been on the shelf? Without that info' you don't know when you 'should' replace it. Mine fell off a wall anyway so I guess I 'should' replace it regardless not going to

My Shark lid is about four years old. I usually throw the lining in the washing machine about every six months and dismantle the vents to clear out the remains of all the dead bugs in there (it's surprising the amount that gathers inside them).

I'll be looking at buying a new lid in the next year or two.

Depends which lid I use, my Duchini is less than 12 months old, my Box DM print helmet is over 3 years, but it is unchipped, unscratched and the lining is still good and grips so I wear that sometimes!

Both my Shark lids look and smell brand new, one is 3 years old and one is 6 months old. Partially because I'm a pleasure
rider and part of my ritual before going for a ride out is to have a shower meaning my hair is always clean.
Both kept in a bag in another bag and in a cupboard when not in use so they see little UV unless I'm out on the bike.
Neither have been dropped although I caught one on a low doorway in a country pub while it was still on my head.

One of my Shoei lids is five years old, still in very good condition. Occasionally give the linings a scrub. I can't see the need for replacement yet.
My other Shoei is four years old but has had very little use so I'll just bring that into play when the first lid retires which won't be any time soon.

I don't normally get rid of helmets unless I drop them so I have some I haven't worn for years.

I did have a robin nesting in one of my HJC helmets I left on a shelf in the garage once. My grand daughter thought it was great watching the birds flying in and out of the open visor. It was dumped after little robins flew the nest due to lots of bird shit.

Kept my MT Blade SV for 3 years despite dropping it over ten times. Should've replaced it in the first 2 years tbf.

Now have a 2017 AGV Corsa R which feels a billion times better, probably cause it weighs next to nothing compared to my other helmet and hasn't got the spikey thing on the top.

Mine is 3.5 years (Shark). The visor is pretty scuffed up from daily use and having dropped it off the seat so I'm planning to replace it anyway. May as well since a whole new helmet of the same model is only £100 more than a Visor. Or it would be if the helmet was still available.

For a while I was upgrading every year and amassed quite a collection of Shark lids. I bought the Speed-R carbon last year and I am very happy with that and will be replacing when that gets dropped or damaged but I would imagine I will give it a 3 year cycle.
