Basically as the title says my RST Tractech are falling apart after my last crash so need to replace them. Thought I'd come here see if anyone has any suggestions. Now I can't wear the normal boots/ex- surplus I've tried but I just can't get comfortable with them on the bike. However need something with good grip as the RST just slip on the tiniest piece of gravel.

Any ideas Question

I've been rocking a pair of Daytona Strive GTX's for a year now, and they're honestly the best bit of bike gear I've ever bought. Okay, they're definitely at the higher end of the boot market, but I can honestly wear them all day. They feel like you're wearing the comfiest pair of slippers you can imagine. They're also completely waterproof (if you look after them with the special polish stuff) since they're goretex, and they're brilliantly warm as well (Ridden 600 mile days in them without even thinking about my feet).

I got the strives because they have the toe slider and the reinforced shin protection which is nice, but the regular road stars are probably just as good.

The soles have pretty decent grip, and after quite a bit of use they still look new.

Can't recommend them enough!

Mrs K has sidi black rain, loves them. I have alpinestar smx6 goretex..very good for riding most of year. In summer they're a little warm. Have some alpinestars scout..(halfway between mx and road boot) not sure if they work with sportsbike peg positions. Never had a grip problem. Sidi courier or equivalent would be my next buy (if I could argue cost over use.)

I've only had:

Caterpillars
Dickies
Spada Curve Evo
TCX Infinity
UK Army

TCX were sublime, but hated the height and really hated the buckle system.

Cats and Dickies were cheap, lasted well, but not waterproof or bike specific.

Army are Goretex and comfy, but a bit of pain to get on/off and not bike specific.
£23 though.

Spada is, comfortable, easy on/off, waterproof, flexible and decenet combination of feel through the sole and lightweight flex.
Seem grippy enough.
Plus £100 Thumbs Up

Not much experience though.

Ahhhhhh ok.
'Not much experience though'..
Wore out a pair of 'Frank Thomas', great boot, no grip.
My sidi vertigo corsas are on on their second set of soles.
Alpinestars 2, 3, 5...toe weather protection useless and sole came off with prolonged use.
Smx 6 have better design.
Short boots good too, Smx 2 wp very good, but water runs up leg and down into boot after 2 hours of riding.
Width of foot worth considering.. sidi, a star..48 euro, fits my UK 12! Tcx, puma and richa are a narrower fit.
Spending time finding good boots has made riding (and walking around) more enjoyable.
Decent boots and some hiking shoes in rucksack.

Tuzo SKK9T are fairly affordable and good value. The adjustability of the buckles does leave a little bit to be desired but they *do* adjust There are two on each boot - these push in and pull out of the boot in order to position for tightness, once buckled. Pulling them out and pushing them in is a faff - and often they seem to have almost "fallen" back in once you've taken the boot off and come back to them the next day. However, once you've sussed out that forcing them doesn't work too well, they seem decent enough.

Grip-wise their soft sole means gravel isn't too terrible - however loose gravel will never offer that much purchase. My only comment here would be that the harder and thicker the sole, the less you'll be able to feel your foot slipping. So in one sense you want a thinner, softer sole - but then, of course, you're sacrificing longevity and protection. Like everything else with biking, it's a matter of striking a balance.

The Tuzos are comfy off the bike, have leather uppers, last reasonably well, and for £70 are probably as good as you'll get for a cash-chunk under a ton. Mine were good for about 20k miles before starting to look tired, and a lower buckle giving up. I still do wear them on a daily basis though - partly because I'm mean but also because I dislike breaking new stuff in.

I prefer the Tuzos to some three hundred quid Sidi Couriers I own - these are imo overkill and offer too little feel either on or off the bike. I don't even like them for off-roading.

You don't say what it is about normal boots that means you can't wear them.

My default is alt-berg hogg. A proper skywalk sole means they work as a good walking boot off the bike. They have been fully waterproof for me (unlike the Sidi Black Rain I and before) and comfortable on and off the bike in all weathers - though they get a bit warm to walk any distance in during the middle of summer. A full range of sizes and widths means you can get something that fits perfectly (I got mine from Silvermans in London, who keep a wide range in stock so I could try on several pairs to get the right fit).

I've probably put about 60,000 miles on mine, they are still going strong. The only issue is that they are quite thick at the toe (due to the sole), so on Mrs Bamt's old 125 it was tricky to get under the gear lever.

British Army Pro Boots for me. Goretex lined, fantastic quality and superb value for money. More rugged than any purpose made bike boot I’ve worn and at a fraction of the cost.

No brainer really.

Another vote for alt-berg. They take a fair degree of breaking in.

The vibram soles are super grippy once worn in but can be slidy until they've been walked about in for a while. They also tend to be a wee bit slippy if they are dry and you're walking on something wet or vice-versa but just for the first step or two. On the bike this isn't an issue, it can be when hill-walking.

Which Army surplus have you tried?

For instance Cadet boots are horrible, East/Central European boots are dire, ECW AB30 (Prabos Defender)Goretex boots are very comfortable, original pro-boots are very comfortable, Altberg Defenders are supposed to be good.

There is a big difference between different types of surplus boots.

I've had Richa Drift boots for the past few years, happily waterproof, could be more comfortable to walk around in but good enough

would have another pair when they've worn out

They have a reputation for erratic quality control.
Some get a good pair and love them but some get a Friday afternoon pair that fall apart.
I know every manufacturer has that but it seems RST let a few more of them past quality control than many others do...

I also have a pair of these for walking in. They are great, but not waterproof (they are designed to be with with sealskinz socks) and no motorcycle specific reinforcement.

I love them as a walking boot, and would use them in the bike in fair weather.
