My neighbour has just bought him self a Harley Sportster an let me have a go up an down the road.

Never ridden a belt drive before, not that i could tell the the difference from chain n shizz...but really liked how it rode.

Compared to my Bandit, it felt like it weighed more than a small moon but was massively torquey

One thing that was stupid about it, the rh foot peg is right up against the exhaust, reckon it may get a little warm....

besides that I likes it, do i need to start looking into buying leather chaps?

His was basically this bike

You've always had the ghey.

Inb4 G starts saying that it's gearing giving the illusion of torque.

V-Twins with large capacity do have a lot of torque low down and it will be fun to ride for a while.
It's longer runs where other shortcomings of cruisers become a pain in the butt.

I'm genuinely surprised by the numbers of Harleys I'm seeing commuting each day - on my run into London from Kent, it's not unusual to get passed by half a dozen or so, most of them on the motorway section.

I like the look of some of them, but I couldn't buy into the 'lifestyle', which is probably the reason I haven't bought one yet.

Oh, plus the fact that buying the bike is only the beginning, then you have to shell out on all the bits that make it stop, go and handle in anything like a sensible way, although there's plenty of used bikes with all the right gear on, so that's the way forward.

That seems like a very odd route from Brighton via Kent... Laughing

Full on dinner-masher here. Rolling Eyes

I’ve got a 2005 Sportster XL883 Low. They’re not the greatest of bikes from stock. Crap exhaust, crap fueling and crap shocks. Once you’ve sorted them issues out, you have yourself a reasonable bike. The handling is nothing like a Jap sports bike or commuter but once you get over the difference in handling they’re OK. Massively overpriced for what they are though so I’d recommend getting a used one with all the issues sorted out.

It was funny, even though I own two Harleys I was having a discussion with a well-known (and respected) mechanic and I was complaining about how Harley manufacture bikes knowing that the new owner will have to do shit loads to get it to run properly and handle better. Compare this to Japanese bike manufacturers who seem to get this right, straight off the bat (including their cruisers). I was told that apparently “I’d completely missed the point of Harley Davidsons” and that they were a solid “blank canvas” for customisation. I did mention the reliability issues, the value for money and the cost of parts but apparently “thats the whole point of Harleys”, Completely lost on me but I still like them.

They did the XR1200X which was (relatively) nice, it even had decent adjustable Showa suspension. I took one out for a test ride a few years back, along with a Buell XB something. Didn't float my boat then, felt too agricultural, but maybe now... Thinking

It's like the 'Because I'm worth it' line.
Which to me translates as
'I'm vain and a bit thick with money'... Laughing

The only (modern) Harley I sort of like's the 883 Iron, which seems to be universally hated, although being heavy and low-down's the opposite of what I like.

I also quite like the Harley Sprint from Twilight, not that I've ever watched it Embarassed

I rather like the Street Rod although the exhaust is a bit 'big guns' ish.

Personally if I could justify 8k'ish on a cruiser'ish bike then I'd add a few hundred and get a Diavel... Cool
